Default 3 and a half Lion eyes

    Hi folks ,
in search for something to post for this month theme i stumbled over this frame of this two lionesses , image taken at 14th borehole last year during my trip to the KTP with our BPN friends who guess...... yes Andre and Gabriela .
This was happening a short while after the Giraffe chase by one of the lionesses ( Gabriela posted that some time ago ) , well i came too late again !!!!! After they all reunited they were having out in the shade of on the Acacia trees that are staying there at the WH , loads of cars and no space to move ....... KTP at its worst .
Finally i found a spot to park the car and being relatively close and with a free view to most of the Lions , but after the chase they all just rested in the shade .
From time to time they moved and groomed a bit , this was just a take of it .
To get this tightness of the frame i cropped massively for my circumstances , so IQ has suffered a fair bit , but for web purpose it is acceptable from my POV , i just love the overall situation they gave me very briefly .

    Canon EOS 1D MK IV
    EF 500 IS L
    HH

    F 6,3 ; Iso 800 ; 1/1250 sec

Processed with double processing in DPP 4 and PS CC ; cropped for comp to 45 % of FF.

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread

    Cheers Andreas

    Hi Andreas

The first time I tried a RP one your posts
Did contrast layer and selectively apply to girls.
Did D&B to get more depth image.
    Brightened BG with less contrast.
Cropped ever so slightly from bottom.
    Selectively sharpened for web.
    WDYT?
    Regards

    Andre.

Hi Andre thanks for taking the time for RP , much appreciated .
I am fine with the tonal changes ,but would back off by 50 % as the ladies have been in the shade so a lower contrast does look a bit more natural , for me .
They eyes ....... mmhm , not that much my taste Andre a wee bit overdone for me , more sharpening not needed i think , if so just a bit more selectively please my dear big brother .

But again i thank you for your effort

    Cheers Andreas

Wonderful image Andreas. I like the pose and comp. André's RP is a good one though your OP is almost there. Nice work.

Hi Andreas - Nice intimate moment captured and a bit quirky too. As you said, I do think the IQ is not up to your usual standards due to the large crop. Both versions work for me though I think I prefer the darker bg of your op. I like the wavy tongue peeking through the mouth of the one on the left.

Somewhere between ur OP and Andre's RP , quality is certainly affected by the crop but still good enough. Nice moment captured . TFS !

Hi Andreas, can't really tell/compare the two postings on the laptop, so will leave it with you guys, but a nice moment captured. The almost closed eye conveys nicely the interaction of the other female.

Nice interaction and looks fine on web sized image for me.
I could see a version in between the two perhaps.

    Hi Andreas

Nice capture of the Lioness expressions, but overall the photo does not work as the BKG is too bright and blotchy (red/yellow patches)
The crop doesn't work for me either rather go tighter, either keep it 3:2 or 1:1 format in between never works...

Thanks so much folks for your kind comments , all are appreciated .

Peter - the BG is as i wanted it too be , as it is as i saw it during time of shooting , i tried a version with deeper tones in the BG and it did not work for me . The color blotches are there in the original so i left them in .
Agree with you regarding the crop , but as this is already large crop i tried to keep as max pixels as possible and accept a comprise .

Not at home now , but i just got the idae about a B/W , maybe tonight when back home .

    Thanks again, Andreas

Andreas , I have never understood that mantra,

The minute we put a lens on a camera and press the shutter what we saw has been manipulated be it from perspective of 3:2 ratio crop, to lens blur, sensor interpretations of colour.
    Raw conversion etc etc

And as far as our memory goes , totally unreliable and if you going to covert to B&W then you might as well change the BKG in colour, B&W is definitely not as you would have remembered it.

I believe photographers with this mindset , pardon the pun but are missing the big picture.... I don't believe as Photographers we should be just XEROX machines ...

Last point if Photographers just want a fateful/copier/documntary photo and are against enhancement ..they why shoot RAW ..just shoot Jpeg...

Sorry for the Rant .. I just hear this comment so much ..and just don't get it....imagine if Ansel Adams had that mind set .. we would have been robbed of such wonderful work.

Please Don't take offence , just my opinion...

Peter before i start to comment on your comment , i have no problem with your opinion about i.e. my image /my views of things , if we all would have the same views /opinions how boring would BPN / Photography and the world in general be !!!
So again thumbs for your open discussion .

I agree with you about your point regarding our memory and the technical things when the images are taken !

With this posting i have chosen the route i did , nothing wrong with it from my POV , in other images i choose another route , not feeling i miss the bigger picture .
Not feeling i am acting as a machine , and i can be very playful from time to time .
As i do shoot RAW i make enhancements for a final output image always , but enhancements can vary from image to image and are subjective .What one finds an enhancement could be too much for another one or vice versa, from my POV.

And there was or is not only Ansel Adams , there are or have been others in this business .....

I am not feeling offended , just have another opinion than you in this case about your general view of things .

    Regards Andreas
