Baby coots are lets say, interesting, to say the least. But mother still loves them....

This was shot with 7D2, 600 f/4 IS II + 1.4TCIII, 1/1600, f/8, ISO 500. Shot in available light, handheld but supported on wire fence.

    Geoff:

And I thought loon chicks were a bit scraggly!

Nice shooting angle, well exposed whites, those bills can be a real pain when coupled with a dark bird.

Wish they were angled more our way.

    Cheers

I wonder if you had to crop heavily for this tight framing, I see a fair bit if noise in the image, which could be a result of a large crop.
In that case, I'd leave it much looser, as the tenderness is still going to show through the shot.
Great interaction and as Randy mentioned, you got the exposure right.
This will remind me that next time I see a coot chick I'll recite my best Arnie impersonation from Predator to it: You are one ugly mother………

Yes this was a heavy crop, probably only 20% of the original file. I didn't run any NR on the first post except LR default chroma. Here is a repost, same cropping but selected NR on background. I found the crop with both birds either left a lot of open empty water or was a severe pano composition so that was my thinking behind the presented crop.

That's much better with the NR!

There is nice interaction here. The background has been improved with NR but there are issues with the adult birds head which is not showing too much detail. Were you quite underexposed for the blacks?
