My first image so be gentle with me but not too gentle. I need to learn...

Taken in Brittany, France with a 40D and a Canon 400mm DO + 1.4TC. Cropped slightly to get the bird away from dead centre.

    Evaluative metering + 1/3 stop. F 7.1, 1/800 sec, ISO 200. Aperture priority.

    Thanks for looking.

awesome first post, sean and BIG welcome to BPN!!! only thing i could suggest is a slight crop from the bottom and left. that would bring the bird out of the center of the frame a little more and make it a little stronger!! exposure looks great and love the rocks!! something we dont have a lot of on the beaches here in the US. i'm glad though. that would hurt to have to lay in!!!!!

    Big Welcome Sean !!!!

Agree with Harold totally, changes will make a difference. Can add to select the head area and increase density a bit. Would add a couple points of black to the neutral channel in selective color. Will repost is a couple of minutes. I like the tech info very much and nailed the exposure !!! Looking forward to many more !!!!

Thanks for your kind and encouraging comments. I really appreciate them. I like the crop too. Alfred you said 'Would add a couple points of black to the neutral channel in selective color'. Did you do this to your version? I can't see any difference but I'm looking at this on a lousy laptop monitor. I should hopefully be getting a separate standalone monitor in the next couple of days. I'm hoping this will help my post-processing improve a bit and allow me to see some of the finer points I miss.

Hi Sean I did and the different is very slight. It was added only to the area around the head. Used a quick mask to avoid the cookie cutter effect. Great base image !!!!

btw once you get the monitor make sure to calibrate. You can also calibrate your laptop.

OK, I see it now that I'm on a monitor at work. Subtle but a definite improvement. My PS skills are somewhat limited. I can see that I need to learn more about quick masks. Many thanks.

Beautiful image Sean and one of my very favourite birds! Agree about the crop. Loved the 'bird in its environment' aspect of this picture - colours are terrific.
