    Default Green Heron

A few days ago based on a tip that there were 20 juvenile Wood Ducks on a nearby pond, we set out in the early afternoon with a bright overcast. As we drove past the pond, there they were with at least two adults. We left the car and walked as quietly as possible towards the tree protected edge of the pond. I was able to capture a few images of the parents perched in a fallen dead tree before all, parents and juveniles, slowly moved to the far side of the smallish pond.

I spotted a Green Heron dining across the pond at the waters edge. He eventually decided to fly to the dead branches of another closer fallen tree in the pond. He proceeded to groom himself giving us every conceivable pose a Green Heron can produce, interrupted by intermittent displays of sloooooow motion stealthy hunting for dragonflies or floating and submerged food bits. C&C welcome.

    D4s, Nikon 500mm + 1.4 tc, 1/2000s, f 6.3, ISO 2500, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley Gimbal head.

Cloned out some distracting branches in Cs6.

Hi Geoffey, thats an unusual pose, well captured. Great behavioural shot, which I have never seen before. Thanks for sharing

I was not sure what to expect from the thumbnail, and actually studied it a bit before clicking on it. What an awesome pose! Although the habitat is messy I do like it. Good comp. I do wish the subject was sharper with better fine detail though. Sounds like you had tons of fun!

For me the habitat is fine, it's natural after all so I don't mind the messy look.
Wish the bird was sharper though.
    What a killer pose!
    Thanks for sharing.

The pose is superb Geoffrey. Habitat is fine, in fact I like it, but in being honest something has gone awry here. You have a good shutter speed but the image is not sharp. How large is crop?,( if cropped). Was kayak rocking, were you having problems focusing? What in camera focus point/points used?....etc.

    Hi Geoffrey,
I don't have much to add as my main issue has been addressed. The PP looks weird. Details are coarse and IQ is lacking.
    Love that pose though!

Truthfully I thought something was 'weird' too, Gail. I did some Nik DE, S&H and selective sharpening in Cs6 to the jpg, and still strange IQ. Thanks to all who pointed out the sharpness issue.
