as you can tell i have a problem with available light. this pic was taken at about 1:30 pm on a bright sunny day.
now that the trees are full of leaves i get into this problem. lens is sigma 50-500mm.
i got this shot of the carolina wren today and didn't quite know how to present it. i cropped it and straightened it got rid of noise and sharpened it and that is all. i hope you will tell me if i did enough to make a picture.

How about cropping it more? If you don't want to crop anymore, you can clone or use patch tool to remove the leaves.

Overall this photo still looks soft to me. The color of the bird is very close to that of the background, which looks busy, too. Although you said it was a sunny day, I think this bird was in the shade? With ISO 800 and you still got only 1/100 sec. May be it was a situation that flash could help?

thanks for your help Desmond. i tried cropping more and getting rid of the green. when i do these things i get what it looks like a brown blob on a brown blob. the green at least draws you into the photo, or thats what i think. i made a mistake in saying i used the sigma lens. i actually used a canon 70_300 mm lens for this shot. the effect is the same.

Interesting perspective MIke !!! You can make images like this one work and work well. Agree with Desmon on the shutter speed It did cause the lack of sharpness. Using some kind of support wast the only way.

Composition wise you need to place the bird close to one of the corners. Small bird in frame will not look good in the middle , actually will look its worse just about every time. Can also try positioning the leave on the opposite corner than the bird for balance. Not easy to pull of but would be a very nice image !!!!

    Hi Mike,
Your bird is a bit soft, out of focus... I would suggest placing him more off center of frame and agree about taking out the green leaves from the picture, its a big distraction for the bird...my eyes tend to go to the leaves, not the bird...:D

    Hi Mike,

Everything has been covered so will say I feel your pain on available light..Have it here as well. A tripod would certainly be the ticket..Using anything available as a prop to steady you and lens also works, and an IS lens is a nice feature to have. But do get a tripod or some like monopods, will make a big difference.
