Hi all , just another Seal from me
Image of this big boy taken on South Georgia Island during my stunning trip in 2012 .
Weather was heavy rainfall or snow from time to time , very seldom we have been pleased by the sun .Made it easier to photograph though without having to deal with strong contrast most of the time .
This guy got chased by a even bigger brother , one needed to be careful when these guys started to run towards you , never knowing where they finally go to .

Canon EOS 1 D MK IV
    EF 500 IS L
    Tripod

    F 5,6 ; Iso 640 ; 1/1600 sec ; man exp

Processed with DPP 4 and PS CC ; cropped for comp to 60 % of FF as i have already cut off the RHS of the big boy during capture is he came close to fast for the 500 and moving back myself.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment to my previous post

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas, he does look like one big fella! His expression is awesome. The red eye, the snow at the nostrils, the comp and colours all look very nice. Sharpness is superb too. TFS. Have a nice evening.

Hi Andreas -- Sea-Elephant it looks like !! huge indeed . lovely details , and that color in the eye looks so amazing. The pebbles are also adding to the scene . A tad bit of space on the RHS for my liking but nevertheless the composition is working for me . TFS !

    Hi Andreas

Love the perspective...maybe just another Sea Elephant..... but for me it was a photo that could make a really good B&W...

Love the perspective and look here, Andreas.
I like Peter's B&W too...would perhaps also like to see a colour version with more punch/contrast?

Thanks so much , Sanjeev ,Haseeb ,Peter and Morkel for your comments /feedback . As always appreciated .
Special thanks to Peter for your RP demo going the B/W route .A tiny bit too strong for my liking though , but agree as a general view i can see this as a nice B/W conversion but with lesser overall punch in the blacks and mid tones .And yes Morkel i can also see a more punchy color version . When i looked at the original i felt i should go the more conventional route as the conditions at the time of shooting has been foggy /overcast and very dull light .
That was my reason for going the way i did , but there are always numerous ways of interpreting stuff .

    Thanks again , Andreas

    Hello Andreas,

I spent some time viewing this thread and found something interesting about those two versions, yours and Peter's:when comparing the two frames side by side (I imported them for this reason), in terms of dramatic content I felt I was looking at two different images. The colour version made the subject appear in wonderment, and with a somewhat humorous, almost spiteful expression on its face, this seal might have been chased but he is likely to take on his adversary. The B/W brings about a different experience: Peter's interpretation has intense emotions but of a different kind: here I see an aggressive and fearful creature under immediate threat. Two different plots for one image and I certainly like them both, I agree the B/W conversion has more contrast than one would expect, but IMO the almost pure white against the almost pure black is what makes this so spectacular in this case.

Back to OP... techs spot-on Andreas, PP impeccable, presentation superb. Nice detail, love the battle scars, the sense of movement given by the flying sand, the POV, and of course those subdued colours contributing to the mood of the image - just awesome, my Boet!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
