This fellow was imaged last month in northern Michigan. These guys can be a challenge to do backlit images because of their wide dynamic range, but I keep working it.

    D4 600VR TC-14 EFL 850mm f/7.1 1/2000s ISO 800. Taken from my little boat; "loonie too"

Post: small crop from left, with canvas added top and right. Toned down highlitghts in water and on whites of bird

Advice and comments always appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Cheers

Nice wing slapping pose captured, Randy. The back light makes it challenging and interesting.

Nice action caught in an unusual view. The light range was well handled and pleasingly different.

A superb capture and kudos for holding the whites and obtaining critical focus....especially from a boat!

Beautiful bird, nicely shown. Dynamic wing flap, difficult exposure. Lovely image, thank you for sharing.

The back/side lighting makes this shot, love the wing position and highlights on the right wing. Great details and nice details in the blacks without over pushing the shadows as some seem to do. I wish more bird photogs would work away from the norm of sun behind you and come up with original and much more interesting images as you have done here. I travelled with Andy Biggs last year in Antarctica and he was telling me he almost only takes shots with back and side lighting these days. I am trying to push myself to this type of shooting also to get more variety of images.

Thanks for sharing this great image.

Hi Randy, lovely close up of the Loon, and well done with the overall exposure - and I like the rim light at the back of the head and neck. I do like the wingflap, angled head, and flying droplets. Well captured.

Great job, Randy. Plane of focus perfect and the rim lighting against the dark background works perfectly. Droplets add dynamism.

Background and low angle really do it for me on this image. Well done!

Thanks everyone for your comments. It is fun to do something a bit different. Have some other non standard images as well that might show up in the future.

    Cheers
