Default Grooming Lesson for Junior - common loon chick preening

This juvi was learning how to preen under the watchful eye of its parent. Captured in northern Michigan.

D4 600VR with TC-14 EFL 850mm f/10 1/640 ISO 800. Taken from my little boat "loonie too". I was working the interaction of this pair, so was shooting with quite a small aperture for increased DOF.

Post: Crop top and bottom for comp. Selective sharpening.

    Advice and comments always appreciated.

    Cheers

Superb capture of mother and chick, Randy!

Just thinking as I am viewing - and what a delightful image, by the way - those little chaps know everything from day one! I find this Loon baby grooming really cute, considering he has hatched not long ago...Obviously it is important to keep one's feathers in good shape at all times:) I like everything about this image, starting with the composition, DOF, POV...to the finer details...like sharpness, colours, and of course IQ.

Just lovely, Randy! Enjoyed this, a lot, thank you for sharing!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

What can I say...a lovely scene and beautifully captured. I'm just wondering if it might need a very small amount of clockwise rotation.

you have a well named boat and wonderful subjects, obviously! I also like to shoot out of my boat acquiring quiet approaches. Especially like the spacing. Well done in every respect, thanks.

    Magnificent image, Randy Sir.
As usual every thing is excellent. Love the preening juvenile with mother and their reflection. Great composition.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Awesome image Randy. Perfect timing to nail the very end of the preening stroke. Inclusion of the parent takes this up a notch from just a chick preening. Next time the goal will be for both preening and mirroring each other No nits or crits from me on this one.

Hi Randy, exquisite IQ in this, and you certainly cant beat the light either. Good DOF, both tack sharp, and of course, you usual high standard of exposure you achieve on these guys.

I think its time we swopped Loons for Kingfishers.
