First time shooting osprey....
Not only was it my first time shooting a used 300/2.8 I'd purchased, it was also the first time shooting osprey. I was hand holding the D800 with 300/2.8 from a boat. This was 2013....haven't photographed them since.
They are such beautiful birds! I caught this one coming in to the nest just before touch down.
I cropped the right side for composition. Processed in ACR and CS6 with separate subtle curves for bird and sky. Very light sharpening.
D800, 300/2.8 with 1.2 crop in camera

Nice details and I like the muted light and color palette. Would have maybe liked a little more nest if you have it.

Karen that 300 2.8 certainly produced a very good image, like this one.

Hi Karen, excellent IQ, and the sharpness is spot on. I like the concentrated stare preparing to perch, good show of the talons, and agree, seeing more nest would have been better. I realise the situation, making sure you have the subject in the frame, and taking what you can with the nest. What does the next frame show?

From a technical point of view, one of the better in-coming osprey I have seen here in recent times. Well done. Regards, Ian.

Karen:'
Good landing pose, clear view of head without merge, nicely framed. The subtle clouds add some interest and depth to the bg.
My guess is this was on a channel marker or similar structure, so the rest of the nest may not be too pretty.
Cheers
Randy

Thank you for your comments. I do have quite a bit of nest at the bottom. It is always interesting to see various crop suggestions. So here is another version, crop or go vertical....what do you suggest?

Hi Karen, its always difficult to choose a frame. We wanted more nest - you gave it to us in your RP. But for a flight pose, personally, I feel the incoming pose in your OP is the better one.

Very nice incoming pose, in good light. I also like the RP for wing position. Also like his gaze focused on his landing. A little more nest in the OP would be nice but not critical for me (you could always borrow some from the RP frame).

Thank you, Stu. Apparently the next few frames didn't make the cut as they have been deleted.

Thank you for commenting, Bill. I didn't have more nest in the OP, but I did have a similar shot which I provided in Post #7.

Nice image Karen, shame you have not done them since producing shots like this. Like them both, OP has better contact with eye and nicer wings, RP has better eye direction for the bird landing- its a matter of personal choice. I think half of the nest in second shot would be just right- sounds like the three bears story!

Excellent capture. My vote goes with no2 but there is very little between the two images.
Your first Osprey shots are a whole lot better than my efforts...well done!
