Default THEME: Foggy morning flap with mate - common loon

This loon pair was imaged two weeks ago on a dim and foggy morning. They have a chick, but still have to tend to basic feather management duties such as bathing and flapping. Shortly after this shot both adults flew out to another lake, and didn't return for over two hours. Junior was parked along the edge of the reed beds as usual, lying low, waiting for his parents and chief fish suppliers to return.

D4 600VR f/4.5 1/640 ISO 1250 SB900 with beamer to give a bit more pop. Shot from my little boat, the "Loonie Too"

Post: Mild crop for comp, selective sharpening.

I personally like the adult in the background, although it does look vaguely like the Loch Ness monster here. I have a later frame without the other adult that I might post later.

    Advice and comments always appreciated.

    Cheers

Good story and a very nice image for the theme, Randy. Love the wing flapping and the low shooting angle.

Lovely frame Randy. Great 'cold' feeling around it, and the bird in the BG adds good depth. Lovely POV and detail on the bird. If I had taken that photo in Scotland, that WOULD have been the Loch Ness Monster Well done and thanks for sharing

Letterbox composition works well. I'm easy with the bird in the background.

Great image, dynamic, sharp and great mood with the fog/mist. I like the inclusion of the OOF background bird as it adds to the overall environment showing he wasn't all alone out there. I find the colour a bit on the blue side but given the overall mood I think it is still okay.

Thanks for the comments. I do agree about the very cool color temp, but thought it played up the foggy feeling. I have done versions with slightly warmer temp, which look good as well, but wanted to try and capture the 'mood' of that foggy morning.

    Cheers

Here is a version with +4 on the temp. slider in Lightroom. Fairly subtle change, but a bit warmer rendition.

Let me know which you prefer.

Wonderful scene, love the mood. To my eye, version 2 is a bit more interesting because of the color on the loon's head, but I will leave it to the artist's discretion. Superb details.

    Hi Randy,
I really like the repost and agree with Grace's comment.
Lovely feather detail and I like the loon in the BG just wish the outline was more distinct,

Repost is perfect for colour for me. Very nice...such a minor tweak but really got rid of the overall blue and kept the cool mood.
