It was an enormous privilege to be able to see how the pack of African Wild Dogs (Painted Dogs) regurgitated food from their morning hunt for the 17 puppies at their den on Ngala Private Game Reserve. The puppies have grown so much since this was taken, and it's good to know all of them are still thriving. Thanks to my friend Grant Beverley from the Endangered Wildlife Trust for showing me this amazing moment of natural history.

    Hello Morkel!

What a wonderful surprise! Whew, 17 puppies?

Wonderful behavioural shot and the expression from the little "painted dog" is just priceless! Very special capture and I thank you so much for sharing:)

I cannot imagine better framing, given the size of your lens and proximity of subjects - my eyes are focused on the two muzzles as they meet and the meal is passed on and I notice with great delight the determination to grab that morsel on the little one's face. Awesome sighting Morkel and I like the vivid colours, sharpness is there where it matters.
I wish it wasn't so tight but you probably had no choice, I do not mind the chap on the left because his presence helps create a 3D feel to the whole scene, very well captured and I really enjoyed viewing, thanks again

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Morkel - Wow 17 pups! It's so tough to get unobstructed views in the frenzy and chaos of their greeting and eating rituals so I have no problem with the comp and so-called distractions. It's a great behavioral image. Only thing for me is that the adults and grass look a little orange so I would reduce the orange saturation in ACR.

    TFS,
    Rachel

This is so intimate and such a fortunate moment for you to capture! My eye readily goes to the eye of the main dog and down her nose to the eager tiny pup. All the rest shows the chaos and eagerness during feeding time. You certainly don't mean 17 pups from one mom, do you? Although when I bred my English Setter she had 14 pups, so maybe all 17 belong to just the one breeding mom. Amazing! She must be very healthy and strong. I love the little white tail of one sticking up on the right side. Adorable detail plus a nice bit of framing for the action. Alas, I have not yet seen wild dogs.

    Thanks folks.
Rachel - I already added a cooling filter as it was overcast and the surrounding foliage also gave up a yellow sheen (dry mopani trees), so am happy with the final colour balance here.
Nancy - yup only one mother, the alpha female!

    Hi Morkel
    Love the moment captured!
The pups--still blue eyes, but they love meat!
You must have been really close to get this DOF with 6,3..
Nice detail on mom and pup's faces.
    Regards

    Andre.
