Default Drinking up by the river

I got loads of images from the boat at the Chobe river in Botswana. The 2 1/2 hr ride was super fun and gave some splendid opportunities to get close to the eles.
This is near full frame, no more space below. I was happy that I got the water splash at the bottom, I wish I had time to slap on the 70-200 2.8 II but things were happening fast. The boat was rocking as everyone was jostling to get the shots. This is at 100mm with the 100-400 II on the 5D III. Steve gave a good reply to Karen's Q reg SS. I agree that I kept the SS high as the boat was rocking and also I wanted no motion blur on the ele.

Hi Sanjeev - Great texture and detail and this has the added bonus of no intersecting eles in the bg. Yes, a bit tight at the bottom but you've explained the problems of shooting from the boat. Yes, keeping ss high is always best. My rule of thumb is minimum of 1/1600 in a boat with motor vibrations in relatively smooth water and even higher if there is bounce or a lot of movement, The pp on this one is better again.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Sanjeev, just dropping the whole frame down a fraction would have helped, but in the excitement....

I think this is the best from the series and you still have the little bird too. The horizon line I also feel is perhaps right too and you don't feel it's cutting through the body. Techs look good, especially the SS, but agree with your own crit about choice of lens, it is also sharper & faster., remember for next time. have you lifted the shadows a fraction?

Hi Sanjeev, like the moment, face, position and DOF. The colours look natural. Yes as mentioned a bit more at the bottom but I like the frame. Well done shot. TFS.

    Cheers,
    Miro

Whew, did I have to look for the little bird But I eventually found it, LOL.

I can only echo those comments above, Sanjeev: well exposed and sharp, I like the colours overall, lovely pose from the ellie who seems to be taking great delight in some refreshment by the edge of the water.

Never shot from a rocking boat as I am too afraid I will end up diving to recover my equipment, I also struggle to remain "Mrs. Nice" if my companions talk or shuffle around too much. I think you did great in the field under the circumstances, and your PP work meets everyone's taste, so very well done my friend

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Nice and in-your-face here.
I like the details/texture and the little bird as well. The splash is nice and would've liked to see more, as mentioned you could have framed less on top, but I know how it goes if the boat is rocking.
