Default 3 Weeks in Italy, what would you do?

Heading to Italy in Aug. I have a 5D Mk3 and a 7D Mk2, the lenses I could take are 70-200 2.8 V2, 24-70 2.8 V2, and a 50mm 1.8. I only want to bring 1 body, and the 70-200 may be a bit much weight wise. I guess the real question is what body?? Thanks for your help and advice. Bringing a MeFoto travel tripod. Mike

If you're doing more scenery and culture, I'd opt for the 5D3 for IQ. You could crop to get close to the 7D2 magnification factor, if you're careful about sharpness technique. The 50mm isn't that big but unless you're into shooting in low light (and there may be good opportunities for that) it isn't a huge advantage over the 24-70 and you give up the zoom. I'd bring the 70-200 for sure.

But do you want to go without a backup body? For three weeks? If carry-on is an issue I'd risk the 7D2 in checked bags, for a backup if nothing else.

I have the same two-body rig with the 70-200/f4 and the 24-105mm and 15mm ultrawide, plus a 500/f4. For trips like this, I'm taking one in September, I take only the 5D MkIII. I would only take the 7D2/500mm on a trip that specifically included birding.

I DO plan to buy the 5DSr before my September trip and that's the body that I'll take. It'll be overkill for most of my uses, but I never know when I may get a "wall-hanger", where the extra resolution could pay off.

My entire rig is insured with a rider on my renters' insurance. I have a ThinkTank shoulder bag for the whole travel rig and carry-on international flights with no issue. I do carry a full sized tripod in my checked bag.

The only thing I'd change with your rig is to swap a 70-200/f4 for that f/2.8. You don't need that extra weight unless you're doing some sort of specialty shooting. The 5D3's high-ISO performance is good enough for almost any situation at f/4.

You should send a PM to Cheryl Sletcha (moderator in OOTB), she has just gotten back from a couple of trips to Italy.
