This was at a pool near Shinde Camp, Okavango. I think it was a display to ward us off! I wish the light was more behind me, but then this was the best angle we had as there was a mound on the other side.

You captured a fine moment here, Sanjeev! The warm light is just kissing his eye, the side of his head and along his lower jaw. The skin texture is really nice also. The water dripping from his chin gives a hint of motion. The partial reflection add to the image without being distracting. TFS!

Thanks Karen. In hindsight I think the SS should have been a tad higher. Maybe open the aperture to 5.6?

Hi Sanjeev, great to have a solo hippo and I think you did the right call, all you have is the subject, great.

Personally I would have ramped up the DoF even to say f/11 as it's amazing how things can tail off when that gapping jaw opens. Often you will be offered the head on, and the camera will focus at the back of the throat and the nose is OOF. I might selectively add some more sharpening to the top part of the mouth and also try to get a bit more 'depth/form to the roof of the mouth. In this instance increasing the saturation to say +20 I think adds more richness to the overall scene, but just my take. I think the landscape format works, unless you bolted on the 1.4 then perhaps a portrait may have been bester?

Hi Sanjeev - Nice low pov and timing on the open mouth. I like that we can see the very fine hairs in the light along the side of the mouth. If you do add the saturation which Steve suggests, I would also reduce the blues. Landscape format works for me.

    Rachel

    Hello Sanjeev!

I am really enjoying those images from your last trip, so far all wonderful sightings well captured and processed:)

I quite like the way the light falls on this hippo - IMO makes things quite interesting, and even though the mouth/palate is in the shade there's still plenty of detail. Love the rich colours and the water splash, I too think more DPF needed here but you did very under the circumstances, I enjoyed viewing and looking forward to more, TFS

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
