    Default Rose Breasted Grosbeak

Still working from the laptop but this one came in really close to me. I coaxed him in with his song on my phone, he nearly landed on my head! Canon T3i, Tamron 150 - 600mm, f/8, ISO800, 1/1000, HH, mid-morning clear skies but the bird was in some shade. Slight sharpening in PS CS4 and softened the BG. Will work more on it when I get back to my MAC.

Very nice! Sharp on the bird and colors and tonalities look as expected for partial shade. Nice pose and very interesting BG -- wild grape? Greens/yellows are well-controlled. I might look at a slight increase in exposure, or bringing up Shadows in raw. Darker tones often don't display well on laptops so you may see it a little differently when home.

I don't know the bird (wish I did!) but the reds are leaning to blue -- don't know if that's correct. And it's always a quandary how much to correct for ambient lighting such as blue from shade or a green cast from foliage, or the warmth of sunrise and sunset.

Thanks Diane, the red looks pretty true to life but I notice some blue tones in the white feathers so what you are seeing might be true so I'll check it out once I'm home. That is wild grape in the background and there would be some reflection off the bright gravel path I was standing on.

Super pose, Warren! Detail in the blacks, especially the head, look good.... when I see these guys on the feeder, they always look like it's just a "beak attached to a neck". Red and white are looking a bit "blue" to me too. I think I'm seeing some noise throughout the image? Such beautiful birds to have here in the Summer. (unfortunately, we have only had them very sporadically visit us this year.) Hope you are enjoying the really NICE weather (FINALLY!) up here in MI!

Thanks Sandy, yes, thoroughly enjoying the weather and the cooler temps than in Ohio! There is definitely some noise in the background and I think it comes from the program that turns the Raw file into a TIF so I can work on it on my laptop. Looking forward to working on my MAC with all the images I have been able to take while up here!

Have you tried the Adobe DNG converter? It is lossless - just packages your raw files so they can be read by ACR versions too old to support the camera. It's updated as new cameras come out. The result should be identical to the original raw file.

Looks better to me -- a trace warmer (toward more neutral) and a little brighter. I just noticed the OP doesn't have an embedded profile, which could change the appearance for some viewers, but I have Firefox set to assume sRGB in that case, and when I open it in PS assigning sRGB, the appearance doesn't change, so looks like it was sRGB, just didn't get tagged.

Getting nitpicky, but is there some smoothing from noise reduction in the head?

Still a gorgeous bird -- wish I had one!!

Hmmm, thought I saved for web, maybe I did a re-save and forgot, I'll have to check. I did not do any NR on the bird, just some mild tweaks on the BG.
