This past Friday morning early, I mean getting up at 3:00 AM to get to our destination, Ocean City Rookery, before sunrise which we almost made, to find no less than dozens of Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons, adults and juveniles perched and flying about. Quite a spectacle to say the least. This sunning YCNH was one of many that love to get into this pose seemingly to soak up the suns heat. This one closed its eyes. C&C welcome.

    D4s, Nikon 500mm + 1.4 tc, 1/2500, f 7.1, ISO 1000, Gitzo tripod, Wimberly Gimbal head.

Removed some distracting branches in cs6.

Hi Geoffrey, fun image with a super cool pose. Bird looks a little bright on my screen, and pity about the background, which is a little busy for my liking. TFS

What an amazing pose! Very nice tonal detail in the light feathers.

That's a great pose you have captured looks like it's scooping up the sun.

Great yoga pose for sure. I almost expect to see a slice of cucumber over the eye. The busy background is typical of the rookery; I don't mind it since it captures the sense of the place. The bird is a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.

Thanks, Bill and for pointing out the correct bird brand. There seems to be potential for this error if you're editing both types of birds in the same post session.

I've been working on images of the BCNH and YCNH juvies that we saw. They're particularly tough to identify; I'm sure I'll make some mistakes with them.

I love it when herons adopt this "sunning" pose! I must admit I'd have preferred the eye open but it does add to the "zen" moment as is. I'd also have likely photographed at wide open aperture. Good image though, well composed and processed.
