Turtle fly-by

Another visit to 'The Caves' dive site but this time armed with a 60mm rather that the fisheye lens. the working distance means shooting through a lot more water, hence the different tones to my last shot.
This one was happy to take a look at the strange air blowing creatures invading his home area, and stayed with us for a few seconds before going up for a breath,

Thanks for taking a look at this one Rachel. Shooting through as much water as I had to on this occasion really hurts the colours - even the strobes lose their effectiveness. The exif gives me a shooting distance of 2.71 metres which is a long way for underwater shots, but given the turtle is somewhere around 4-5 feet in length there weren't too many other options. This is about 90% of the full frame, which probably explains why most turtle shots are with fisheyes and ultra wide-angles.
I really struggled processing this one due to the above reasons, so thanks for running a second pair of eyes over it. I think maybe your RP is just a tad too far, I think after seeing yours it needed around 75% of the differences, here's a quick re-edit with a nod to your work, thanks a lot for your time

Your RP is just about perfect! First, I must commend you on the lighting. Very even and well done. The pose is very nice. The angle of your shot provides a great opportunity to observe the different patterns, colors and textures of the back, underside, legs and head. Thanks for sharing!

As a bird photographer I must comment that I really like the "wings" in a full upstroke!
. Pretty neat image overall, and the two reposts really nicely bring out additional textures on the flipper and neck.

Love the shot! The RP's are an improvement as far as punch and details extracted from the bright face area. Good composition and the water seems to be so clear!
Very jealous our water here is almost always green!

Just noticed that the turtle appears to have a WR tattoed on its nose :)

Hey Mike. I like the crop and pose here, and thanks for explaining how and why the tones are affected.
Those of us who always shoot above water learn a lot from your anecdotes on these posts
I like your repost more...

I like the overall tone and color but think the OP id too bright in the HL and 1/4 tones , your RP and Rachel īs version are covering that .
I have another version , wonder what you think .... ?
I also added a bit more punch to the image .

Andreas,
I've finally got to a proper screen to view the differences on your repost, and I have to agree they work very nicely. The extra punch is just right, thanks for your efforts, I really did struggle with the colours on this one and with the help of Rachel and yourself I feel it may well be worth starting again as there is a reasonable image lurking there somewhere!
