Well after a lot of patience I managed to get a bit closer. The grass was wet (so was I!) consequently some of the plumage was also wet.
    All C&C welcome.

Beauty Jon. The owl is looking real good against the BG. I love the eye contact and the position of the right wing. Never seen a Barn Owl up here for a few years now. The trees/bushes break the BG up nicely.

Nice one Jon, sadly I think the elevated wing may have cast a shadow over the fact, but perhaps in turn, it may have helped the whites. What time of day, looks quite late, just interested. Haven't seen mine for some time. Great to see you out 'in the field'.

The grass was wet (so was I!)
That's what it's all about, getting 'out there' makes the image worth it, but try fish guts and bear poo, now that can be rather challenging, and it lingers too!

Jonathan you have got a great flying pose with the Owl looking straight at you, take Steve's point about the wing position and yours about the wet plumage my only nit would be the leg ring(hate them) but of course that is something out of your control, I would be very pleased if this was mine, great piece of work..

    Jon:

I really like the eye contact here, strong, with nice display of the lower wing.

The shadow is unfortunate. I took a quick pass at softening it a bit, trying to keep it realistic.

It is interesting that he was out in such bright light. Do you often find them out and about that time of day?

    Cheers

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The image was captured at 7.25am 3rd July, you are quite right about the shadow, I had already lifted it considerably. The owls are out hunting in daylight because they have three chicks. Early morning after a rainy night is a good time to go looking because they don't like flying/hunting in the rain or indeed in windy conditions when they find it more difficult to hear their prey. I was out there at about 5.45 but all I got was this brief ply past for about two minutes.

I like the pose and the look, the composition and the light. Pity for the shadow on the head. If the face was light would be a real keeper. Looks like it is banded.

Just about all barn owls are banded in these parts Lorant.

    Jonathan,
Gorgeous flight shot. Very nicely exposed whites. I like the lights and shadows.
Love the details and colours. Beautiful composition too.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Hi Jon, great head turn and eye contact, and love the extended far wing. The placement works well with your vertical comp, and I like Randy's repost on the shadows.

I like the pose. Randy's increased contrast in the shadows worked very well.

The pose is superb but the light is problematic with the wing being bright and dominant. I'm afraid Randy's post is a bit over done IMHO.
