Default Ruddy Duck Bubbling # 2

    Attached Images Attached Images

I just cannot get enough of this ruddy duck. I love everything about them- their perky tail, blue bill, cartoon-like face and smallish size.
I am ashamed to say that I took 856 images of this guy in the 2 hours I spent with him. I know...I am addicted!
Last one I will post so as to not bore you all.
This bubbling display is part of the courtship ritual. The bubbles are created by the bill being slapped repeatedly against the chest.
    Canon 1DX
    600mm
    ISO 1600 F 6.3 1/1250
PP: Crop to 50%, usual sliders in LR5 , warmed the image up a bit,, levels and USM to JPEG. Cloned out a dust spot and a little black speck in water on RHS
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

A super capture Gail. I love the behaviour and amazing facial expression on this bird's face. A great lady duck's view of a very handsome fellow! Excellent work. Regards, Ian

Oh come on, now you're killing me!! This is the one!! I have been trying for years to find a nice drake like this in full courtship mode. 856 frames of the same subject, you are as bad as me, well maybe a bit worse:) The head on shot is perfect as it shows the bubbles well and the eyes are beautifully visible. Your usual nice details and exposure and that awesome water color make for a real special frame. Calander or book material for sure. Great job Gail

Gail I'm loving your shots of this bird, you certainly will not bore me with them but perhaps not the whole 856.

This is great, the pose, colour of the water and exposure on blacks and whites is very good indeed

The detail on those bubbles takes it over the top

Beautiful action shot, Gail. Love the framing, bubbles, head on shot, green water, POV and IQ.
I wonder how far North you had to go to get this one.

Excellent image Gail. I love the POV, the bubbles make it really special for sure.
Held up really well for a big crop. I am curious as to why not use a TC instead of cropping so much?
I am led to believe the MKIII TCs are really good with the series II lenses.

Thanks for sharing. You're allowed to be addicted. I am sure most of us would take 857 just to get one up on ya.

This is one kick butt image, Gail. Love symmetry and straight on look. You got a lot of details out of your bubbles, and I like the little water droplets above the duck.

As far as Akos' question about using a TC, this camera can handle a 50% crop all day long. I often crop 40% with my 1D4. There are times when you can anticipate a subject may get close that you're better off considering a crop after the fact that risking clipping important elements of an image. When fiddling with taking TCs on and off, you could miss something amazing in a situation such as this. That's my take at least.

A real beauty Gail! I like the straight on look, bubbles, IQ, water color, composition and how the tail tip is visible over the head. If I was being real picky I would clone out the one water drop that is more of a streak near the ducks right eye seeing there are no other streaks in the frame.

Wow. Aside from simply being a lovely image, this really shows the bubbling behavior. I love Ian's description: a lady duck's view. I can easily understand the 856 frames in 2 hours; but how many hours did it take to weed through them all?

    Marina hit the point well.

50% is not a big crop at all with a 1DX. Putting the TC in this situation is a mistake. If the duck opens her wings you will clip them both at this distance or end up with little room around them.

    Thanks everyone for the comments
Akos- I hear you and so so wish I had my TC on! I did have it on for the first 30 minutes that I was in the water with the ducks. The first pass this guy did was very close to me and he did a wing flap and I cut the wings off. Then a redhead duck passed by within 4 feet of me and again I was too close so that is when I decided to take the TC off. Being in the water up to my chest in my waders on means that I very carefully have to take the TC off and put it in my waterproof bag. Once I do that I am very worried that if I take it out of my waterproof bag and try to place it back on my camera ( which is hovering hovering 3 inches over the water) I will dunk my gear.
Naturally, the ruddy decided to bubble when he was further out in the pond.
FYI to all - This duck was introduced to the UK in 1945 by some Lord. Because it is considered an invasive species this duck is being culled in the UK at a cost of 2 million pounds. So far they have shot 3000 birds and have an estimated 200 birds left to kill...This bird is apparently mating with the rare white headed duck in Spain. This action is being sanctioned by the Nature Trusts. Kind of sad if you ask me.
Bill- I have culled the number down to 131 and it took about 3 hours. Never again will I get this carried away!! I am usually a very thrifty shooter.

    It all makes sense.
I need to think outside the box with my own shooting sometimes by always trying to create the image as large as possible in camera. The reasons you guys suggest are very fair and make sense.
    Thanks Marina, Arash and Gail.

    Gail:

A really fun capture of interesting behaviour. Kudos on keeping after it to obtain the image.
