I was fortunate to be one of the first people to visit the den of a pack of African Wild Dogs (Painted Dogs) in the Ngala concession of Kruger National Park last week...this concession is just south of the Timbavati and west of Orpen. There are 17 puppies in this year's litter! While we were there, the adults called them out and regurgitated meat for them three times. We spent the better part of 2 hours with the pups before they all ducked into the termite mound they used as a den again.

So many images to work through, but here's a quick one.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s
    Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
    f5.6 | 1/800 SS | ISO-900
80% of original image, cropped for composition

Hi Morkel - No crits from me. Seeing pups this young is such a special and exciting sighting. I'm glad you were able to experience it. Looks like they were a bit more in the clear than Steve and my experience last year. Cute moment, well presented. The pano crop works. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hello Morkel,

Just awesome, would love to witness such scene... anytime...

Well seen and captured as well as nice PP work, a bit of blue creeping there in the eyes ( I think) but I am so taken with the open mouth/muzzle of the character in the centre of the image, and those cute small teeth and pink gums!

This is well exposed Morkel, characters and action too sweet to describe, love everything about it (and especially that chocolate brown fur...)

Give us more please, I know there's more...Enjoyed viewing, superb interaction captured, well processed and presented

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Agree with Gabriela that a bit less blue could work wonders. But otherwise great interaction that tells a great story Morkel.

Looks great to me I don't really know why but I am suggesting a slightly looser crop if that is possible without introducing distraction. The current background is just fine for me.

    Cuteness factor wins...
Maybe just a bit more NR on the BG...

Great moment here Morkel, and certainly some of the youngest WD pups ever posted here

Techs & PP, looking pretty good here also.

Hi Morkel, yep always a great sighting, not sure how old these were, ours I think were just over a week out of the den, but having an open clearing is such a benefit.

Hi Morkel no crit , just enjoyed viewing these very cute guys .
All does look good to me , the cuteness factor makes it easier to produce a pleasing image for the viewer ........ but you have to be there and get them in the open as Steve said .

    Hi Morkel

    Love it!
Their eyes are bluish when they are that young.
The scene with the centre one taking flack is special, although it seems to be the biggest!
Pink gums and sharp teeth counts! (do not forget the attitude!)
900 ISO on D3S no noise, maybe shorter F might have blurred BG more..

Please PM more info on Ngala- Polentswa was full for Sept- booked 2 weeks in Kruger (south to north)
    Regards

    Andre.

Such a cool image Morkel! We recently got to experience a pack with pups in Tswalu, but their den was in the thickest of environments so no real chance for photographs. Love the interaction you have capture here, with a good separation from the BG and tons of cute factor. TFS
