Excellent image with very nice IQ. Nice pose, beautiful colors, great fine details.
Yellow-green grass looks good, gives the feel of 3D in the frame. Nice composition too.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Bill I agree with your self critique was this a big crop? Like the pose of the bird and it's colours.

Thanks Keith, yes a big crop - taken in S Africa - I can only take my 300mm and x 1.4 TC and most of the time I can never get near enough, (you know how it is) - quite frustrating- I have a 600mm Nikon, but it is too big and heavy for the plane…….. been thinking about the move to Canon because of this as we spend 6 weeks/2 months a year in S Africa … and in that period I can spend some quality time watching birds

I have been on here for a couple of weeks and looking at the quality of the images .. they are at another level compared with most of mine

Thanks Satish for your comments …… very kind of you to make them

Very nice image Bill. Lovely colours and detail on the bird and perch. I would tone down the bright yellow reed, but. I like the crop as is. Nice work

I like the comp. of the image, The reeds in the background look good. I do feel the image is soft particularly in the head area.

Hi Bill, well exposed on this Bulbul, and I do like the blues of the water. I feel your placement of the bulbul is fine, but I would have tried to move back to my left to try and not have the reeds in the image. I agree the head is a bit soft, so trying a bit of selective sharpening may help.

Hope you enjoyed your stay in the western cape. Did you visit Cape Town, as there are numerous places to come away with great images.

    Hello Bill,

Thank you for this post, I found the thumbnail very attractive because of the colours and especially those reeds on the LHS that look almost like a curtain - to me an interesting backdrop and something rather different. I like the space in front of the subject, the pose from the bird, there seems to be a tad too much blue at the end of the perch and on the left leg of the bird but you can fix that easily if you so wish.

Like Stu, I also hope you enjoyed your stay in the Western Cape, and suggest you also pop in to Kwazulu Natal as well in the future - lots of avian species to photograph and sunny skies most of the time, so many places to explore:)

Looking forward to more images from you on BPN,

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

(Thanks Keith, yes a big crop - taken in S Africa - I can only take my 300mm and x 1.4 TC and most of the time I can never get near enough)keep at it Bill I use a 300ml with a 1.4 and rate it very high but I know you need to get something like close, but when you do you can get some excellent results.

Does your lens take a 2x well? I assume it would. That'd give you better magnification, rather than having to do excessive cropping. I am not a Nikon guy, and only heard their 500/4VR does not take a 2x well.

Nice bird and colours, well cropped into the comp. TFS
