I'm new on here and have been posting in the Avian thread - maybe i should have started by posting on here

Here is a shot that I took last year - trying something TOTALLY different from my other bird images

    Softened and processed in LR
    600mm lens - D700
    Goldfinches

Does this in any way work as a concept ……. happy for you to give an very honest opinion …. and say NO definitely not

I like the way the birds are so close in size and overall shape to the plant heads and you almost have to 'discover' them.
It is such a shame that the two goldfinches are so close to the bottom edge and for me that is the main detail it does not quite work (if they were higher up I would crop of the left, right and top close to the main stand of vertical stalks).

I agree with Mike's comments, if everything could move up in the image it would definitely help. I like the colors and the background.

If I was to keep this, I'd probably try some different cropping options...like starting in the middle and crop
out everything to the left, which includes the two birds, with maybe saving the cattail in the middle
without the bird for an anchor.

Another cropping option would maybe just keep everything in the middle, leaving only the 3 in focus
    cattails.

Hi Bill! The finches are beautiful (wish we had them here!) and the thistles have lovely form and shapes... I think this could make a good bird/environment shot if, as Mike and Warren said, you have space make a significant shift down to the left. Although I like the concept of multiple birds in the frame, they are so tiny here, that the space around and between rather overwhelms them. The background is really pretty, with just the exception of the orange OOF circle at the top (being orange, it grabs attention) ... would be an easy fix to clone out tho.

Definitely a nice idea, and the concept is a good one, but I'd consider this image a learning experience. Good advice above about the crop -- aiming the camera lower would place the bottom birds in a much more pleasing position in the frame. As is, I'd crop from the top about halfway to the top birds, and remove the extra space on both sides. If you want to make the best of this image, I'd second the idea to crop out the bottom birds, which are just too close to the edge of the frame. I'd hate to do that as they seem to be nicely in the plane of focus, but unless this is a crop that you can go back to and undo, that is your best option esthetically. But it's probably too much of a crop to preserve image quality.

Hope you'll post more -- this is all an adventure, with no two outings the same!
