Thought I would post something entirely different for me. This is a composite of a Zimbabwe Shona sculpture and a zebra from previous files I have. I find Shona sculpture deeply expressive and would love to be surrounded by it!
To the composite I applied a fractalius layer to the heads, then one to the whole image, plus a layer of topaz impression pointillism to the whole image, all with various adjustments.
I like the idea of the zebra's stripes behind the sculpture. Presumably zebras are indigenous to the part of Africa where the sculptures are created. Even if they aren't, the stripes nicely echo the blacks lines on the sculpture. The colors on the sculpture are appealing, and they help to distinguish it from the background, which was important initially. The texture from the pointillism adds a lot.
Thanks for what you said about the Shona sculptures. It moved me to do an internet search, and it reminded me of a similar reaction when I saw a collection of African sculptures at a nearby university. Every summer for the last several years, I've sculpted some hand-built pottery but wasn't sure what to do this year. That search gave me some ideas.
Thanks Dennis for your thoughtful comments. I was feeling a bit political that day after reading, yet again, about the decimation of the animals of Africa and the neglect and poverty of the native peoples. We are all connected and it makes me crazy that short term greed trumps all. But oops, that is my political stand and I don't mean to preach here.
Interesting. Your explanation helps me see with more appreciation. Like Dennis, I looked up Shona sculptures. Beautiful! Thanks for expanding my knowledge. The sculptures I saw on line were mostly smooth with rough stone surrounding the face and body. I had thought your sculpture might have more details in the face based on this photo. I like the symbolism of the zebra stripes and how they frame the heads. I know what you mean about news of the plight of animals and people making you crazy. Me too.
Anita, Here is the Shona sculpture I used in my image. Most of the processing effect came from the mottling of the stone. Your description of mostly smooth stone and rough textures surrounding the face is correct.
