    Default African Sunset

Do Lions appreciate the beauty of an African sunset? I think they do. This image was taken after a failed attempt of a buffalo hunt. The sun was covered by cloud and he bedded here next to the Sand River. But then the sun dropped below the cloud and began to throw off glorious red rays. He then got up, watched the setting sun for a good minute or two and then walked off.

I wish the lion head did not intersect the river bank. Didn't see it when he got up.
My very first silhouette image, so appreciate your feedback.

Thank you for commenting on my images.

Hi Loi - Gorgeous sunset colors. I wish the lion was more in profile but not something you can control and not a deal breaker. I keep looking at it and wondering if it needs some ccw rotation. I realize the near shore is straight but the far shore looks to slope slightly.

Hi Rachel, thank you for your comment. The river banks are not exactly parallel, so I rotated the image slightly to keep the near bank horizontal. Loi

Hi Loi -- You have brought out beautiful colors !! Agree with you on the intersection of head but the wind blowing through its mane is adding to this image ! I would have cropped slightly from the top and a bit from the RHS of the image !!

The 1Dx just does not have enough dynamic range to capture the true beauty of this sunset. Loi

Loving the colours here Loi, would also like to have had a bit more of his profile here and perhaps not quite so central a placement.

What a pity you didn't have the DR capability of a D4/s OR D810 ............being completely realistic no DSLR can achieve the DR we all crave for ATM, but who knows, one day.

    Dear Loi,

What you think/feel the camera cannot do, Photoshop can, to a great extent

I do like the colours here, Loi, very much. And the landscape. There's a lovely postcard quality to this image, I just so wish the lion was not in the centre, and this you should have thought about while framing, LOL.

The subject's legs disappear into the FG - not ideal IMO, as well as that top of his mane that melts into the river bank. Not much you could do about it if on a game drive vehicle. It is still a lovely image - evocative, a solitary lion, the African sunset...

You just said it was your first silhouette image, so... add the excitement and the overwhelming beauty of the moment, perhaps a bit of a rush as you might have had to act fast before the vehicle moved along...I love your passion, Loi - I think you love wildlife and really try to make the best of all opportunities, so well done on doing something different, experimenting, seeing the moment and capturing the beauty in it. This is perhaps not perfect, nevertheless it is very special, I feel you could have done better in terms of composition but you still achieved something beautiful and memorable - thank you so much for sharing, my friend

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

I wish for a profile more so than this, though I can kind of tell it's a lion.
The colours do rock mate! You've done well seeing this scene and capturing it.
