    Hello everyone!

Well my title tonight is less about my subjects and more about this question I want to ask...Just wondering about this image taken at 12.800 ISO and whether you think it is too noisy or perhaps acceptable. The rhino were moving fast, crossing the road, light fading, two adults and a little one behind them, check the little feet Shot from the vehicle window on bean bag, lots more in this folder taken in better light but I wanted to see what happened if I pushed the ISO, this is the result. WDYT?

    Nikon D4
    Nikon 500mm F4
    ISO 12800
    F4
    1/1000s

Looking forward to your opinions, thank you so much for viewing and comments on my previous images:)

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Lovely detail and I like the red colour from the soil around the faces, legs and torso. Interesting comp and image design...trying to think of something better as a crop or comp...But can't at the moment!

Hi Gabriela - I think it looks pretty good for ISO 12,800 and while it is always nice to see rhinos in the wild, this isn't really working for me. The low pov is great. I'm just not loving that the main subject is angled slightly away, all of the intersections between the main subject and the bg rhinos and that the baby rhino is completely hidden. Sorry, just my thoughts.

    TFS,
    Rachel

And you now know, great, well done, told you to go for it!

I would simply add some straight Liner contrast. I like the warm, earthy tones, but the road is not ideal, sadly there's nothing you could do. Although the DoF gives enough separation between the two, having the two heads intersecting I feel is not ideal. However, like Dumay, I'm struggling to find a more compelling crop.

    Dear Dumay, Rachel and Steve,

I shared this image for one purpose - to get your feedback on high ISO:)

And maybe I wanted to encourage some of the members to consider experimenting a bit more For this reason I left it almost as it was, Full Frame and not much PP work involved. I sharpened it for web though. I entirely agree with your observations - the rhinos are walking on the road (not a natural environment), little feet behind the face of second rhino, heads intersecting. Certainly not ideal and no need to worry about a decent crop, LOL - this will stay in my archives as an experiment, never to be processed again. I am just happy with the results in terms of IQ and glad you feel the same. I have never been shy to experiment and in fact very few images I shared with you were shot at low ISO. I chase good light every time I go out there but when I see something special I often test the camera to its limits, I feel I have nothing to lose. Still working on my PP skills but so far my aim has been to produce good quality images which I can revisit at a later stage as my knowledge improves and I learn new things:)
Have a fabulous evening, thank you so much for viewing and comments, much appreciated

Hi Gabriela from the pure technical POV this looks great , for my eyes , well controlled noise .
Love the subtle colors and good variations and the tones looks great too.
Is it that what you asked for ........
    Well done Gabriela

Yes Boetie, thank you, it was all about noise and ISO... very happy, now I can go and play again...week-end is near

On a more serious note, I have learnt that there are certain times of the day when one is able to capture more interesting behaviour from those particular subjects. In certain places that is, and I know where to look. Either early morning or late afternoon, light is indeed awful but the action is incredible. Worth a try, even at very high ISO

Warmest regards, I know it is only Wednesday but time flies in Africa, looking forward to the week-end...

Hi Gabriela -- 12800 ISO crazy stuff absolutely noiseless !! i liked the colors here but sorry the comp's not working for me . Took the liberty to work on the comp , have made it tighter to avoid the road and get as close as possible to the away moving Rhino. WDYT ?

That is just the crop I was trying out earlier today, maybe even (vertically) tighter on the ears of the one behind so it becomes more of a recognisable backdrop than a companion rhino if you see what I mean.

But this quality for ISO 12800 is impressive.

Thank you Hasseb and Mike. Due to the presence of the little feet and the way in which the heads/horns are intersecting I did not consider processing this image as such. I only shared it because of some previous discussions regarding high ISO. Haseeb, if I were to compose this in a different way I would still leave enough space on the LHS and at the bottom, somewhere in-between the OP and your RP.

Your thoughts are much appreciated, thank you so much for participating

    Kind regards,

I like the shot and the fact you're not afraid of high ISO! Well done Gabriella, I think it looks really good for the high ISO you've employed for the job.

Hi Gabriela, I love the texture you brought out on the rhino. Comp is tough as mentioned above. I think the high ISO works here because the BG is bright. So the noise is less than one would expect for an image at ISO 12800. It's always good to try instead of giving up because of lack of light. Loi

Difficult to comment on the noise at this size, for me to see noise, I need to see the full file in ACR, @ 100%., so, what I see here looks awesome., I do know that high iso setting are usable
in some cases, but not so great in other situations. Depends on the scene, details, light, tones, etc., regardless, very nice IQ for this scene.

  16. Thanks Gabriela Plesea thanked for this post

Thank you Raymond, very much. I just posted another image with lots of noise (also rhino) in Family Friends Fun Forum.

Do let me know if you wish to view the RAW of my images, always happy to get feedback.

Hope you have a wonderful rest of the week, and many thanks for your comments on my images - much appreciated

    Kind regards,
