    Default Scarlet Tanager.

I had finished my day and I was packing it in when I heard this call that I found vaguely familiar. Robin-like, but not quite it. More "raspy", with a few different notes. Then it clicked...Scarlet Tanager! I quickly setup again, and tried to call it in....and sure enough it did come. Not on my selected perch though, but a couple of others of its choice that turned out OK anyhow. The light was already harsher than I prefer, and most images had heavy shadows on the belly with blocked details....this pose, however, kinda hid the worse of the shadows. All the more reason to go back next time I have a chance!!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/7.1, ISO 400, natural light, handheld, small crop for comp, lots of desaturation of the reds, toned down the highlights on the perch, minor bill clean up. Audio used.

Fantastic capture Dan. I like the colours on the bird and the control of the blacks. Blends very well with the BG, and I love the perch. Good work

Great image, Daniel. If anybody ever shot this bird can appreciate the perfect exposure and details.
It is a hard bird to shoot it right.

This is splendid in all respects! I've seen this bird before but have not yet had a shot at it, so I'm very jealous of your beautiful capture! Sharon

These are such spectacular birds, and tough to get right as Karl noted. Good job on the reds. Good head turn. The green bg really sets him off, and I like the neutral perch. Nicely done.

Certainly worth another trip Daniel, that's a cracking looking bird that you have captured beautifully.

Karl and Bill are right, colors look great on a bird whose reds are difficult to get right. I also like the natural perch. This really inspires me to try to get a shot of these I'm not afraid to show in public!

Very nice capture of this stunner, Daniel. The perch and BG work well with the reds.
