Default Herring Gull on Mullett Lake

Just returned from MI and had a chance to capture some images in between opening the cottage for the summer! This Herring Gull was nice enough to pose for me for quite awhile. This was shot in the evening with a low sun angle. Canon T3i, Tamron 150 - 600mm, 600 mm, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/2500. Very little processing, mild shadow lightening in LR, Vibrance enhanced, cropped and mild sharpening in PS CC.

On the road and only on my iPhone till tonight, but looks very good here. The reflections add a lot of artistic effect and interesting context, to my way of thinking. There is a huge range of background detail that works in different images.

A nice pose of the bird. How anyone can tell one kind of gull from another is beyond me.

Thanks Diane! Yes, telling them apart can be tricky and often you have to go on where you are located to make a final call. Luckily this being a mature adult and my location made this one pretty easy.

Hi Warren! Lucky YOU to have a place on Mullett Lake! Woot! I love Herring Gulls (especially that big "honker" of a bill they have!) Exposure here looks really good.... and provides a great profile. I am so wishing that he was just oh-so slightly turned to his right...or that you were a couple of steps to your right. ...but may have created additional shadow. Not sure about the red reflection (boat on shore?). Do you have some Loons on the lake? Darn COLD up here the last coupla days.... below freezing. How much time do you get to spend up there?

Thanks Sandy! Yes, my family has been going up there since the early 50's and we have owned the current cottage since 1969. The cottage celebrated its 100th birthday last year! I share it with my brothers and sisters and get up for a couple of weeks in the summer and then a week in the spring and fall typically. Will probably spend more time once I am retired. I was really hoping this gull would turn a little bit as you state, the reflections are from flags on the dock (to keep the gulls off!) and I had to position myself so the dock was not in the picture. This is only cropped about 20%

I did get some shots of loons and mergansers but nothing really to post here. That is tough to get a good exposure to show any details on the loon's head! That's a beauty on your avatar! The one shot I got was in the evening and just couldn't get close enough to keep from cropping more than 50%.

Sounds like a really neat family cottage, Warren! Mullett is so big, it would probably be rather difficult to even find a Loon... especially with any 'chop' to the water! (the lake I live on is only about 250 acres). Thanks for the compliment on my avatar... I actually took that photo quite a few years ago with a P/S (so you sure wouldn't want to see it full size!) The water birds up here have to spend so much time dodging boats and jet ski's, they seem to always be on "alert". Enjoy your time at the cottage!

We actually had no chop to speak of and on two days there wasn't even a ripple! Rare for this lake.
