I had a nice impromptu encounter with this beautiful specimen as it was busy digging through a rotten log close to the ground. The setting was busy, but it was unconcerned with my presence thus allowing a close approach for some clean portraits. It was rather busy though and its head in constant motion. The trick was to wait for strops in between action. Here is one where the head was tilted upwards in a pleasing way.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/800s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop top and left, lightened the red "mustache", toned down the red crown by adding cyans to it, used the sponge tool to coax out some blues along the top of the frame for added interest.

I always like details and this woodpecker is a favorite. well done. The blues in the back are very nice.

The bird is there, right in front of me It looks so real Beautiful details Dan, perfectly processed. Pose and HA spot on. I love the eye and the concentration being showed. You couldn't have asked for a better pose in a studio Great capture. Well done

Great pose, super detail. Nice PP work, including the sponge on the bg which worked very well.
