The young fern is interesting on its own, but you've made it even better with your processing and composition. The earthy colors fit the subject, of course, and they go very well with each other.
This is wonderful, with fantastic lighting and treatment! I love fern fiddleheads!!
I particularly like your choice of bg. It accentuates the fern and brings out the flecks of brown in the subject. Your post processing nicely presents the graceful lines and detail of the fern.
So lovely and earthy! The glow on the fiddlehead is perfect, as is the composition of it coming into the image from the side & the small leaves heading the same direction. Maybe just a wee bit less glow on the bkgd to the right of the subject, to make it more like that left and below.
Thanks for the comments. I have started using flash for macro, so much easier than lugging a tripod around.
Beautiful, beautiful - the background is so perfect for the fiddlehead. I love the simplicity, the composition and the subtle glow. Very pleasing to look at.![]()

Really lovely. Dennis described the colors as earthy, and that really fits. There is something about the curves of a fern that make it such an appealing subject. (fiddleheads are also quite a nice spring treat served simply with a little butter).
Gorgeous! Love the detail and light. You did an outstanding job of making the fern stand out from the blurred bg. Love how the little leaves (?) stand out along the stem. A beautiful image.
What type of flash are you using? This looks so natural.
Anita, I am using the twin lite macro light (24 EX), made for the Canon 100mm macro lens. It is a heavy set up, but lighter than lugging around a tripod. I also got some Stofen diffusers which fit over the top of each light. Still experimenting with settings. Thanks for your nice comments:)
