    Default Kitty on the Rock

On our afternoon game drive, the radio informed our guide of two separate leopard sightings. One was a mother and 2 cubs in the reeds, shy, difficult to spot even when we were right there in the morning,a nd a lone leopard cub not so far away, so we opted to go for the latter. We found her snoozing in the tall grass, so just parked our vehicle and waited, and waited, and waited some more. The sun went down lower and lower and threw off glorious red and yellow rays, but our girl was still sleeping. We were committed. There was no time left to go back to the first leopard sighting.

Eventually, after the sun had set, the leopard cub woke up from her sleep and began to explore her surroundings. She went up a high rock cliff to stalk the klifspringers, but they spotted her and sounded alarm. So she eventually aborted the hunt and came down to this eye level rock, clear of grass and proceeded to clean herself. Our patience to stick with her paid off!

I had a 1.4X on and was desperately swapped it out for this shot!

One of my favorites. Hope you like it.

Hi Loi - You did well with the this spotlit leopard. I like the look up and the cleaning pose. You did well with sharpness despite the slow ss and the obvious movement of the cat. Not an easy feat.

Hi Loi, nice sighting, often we have to make some tough decisions out in the field in what to choose subject wise and I think your gut feeling was right. Agree with Rachel, I think you did very well based on the techs, but I would suggest you practice more with higher ISO's so it doesn't limit your future captures, but obviously avoiding going too overboard. Like the black background and warm light from the spot, provides a rich feel to the image.

    Hi Loi

Love the mood, with bright eyes and darks spots...

    Nice comp and well exposed!

    No exposure compensation?
    Regards

    Andre.

Hi Andre, I shot Manual, so "exposure compensation" not applied here. The setting works pretty well for a hand held spot light.

People are worried about increasing their ISO, in order to obtain a high SS etc, therefore what I am suggesting is that Loi practices with his dogs (easy access) to see how say ISO3200, or 6400 looks. Providing you have a well exposed imaged I think he would be pleasantly surprised. Therefore Haseeb, the best way IMHO is to trying it an see. So when a high SS is required he will feel confident in raising the ISO.

Hope that explains my point, certainly 1600, 2500, 3200 looks good on the 1DX.

Looking good, Loi! Exposure and techs well handled.
I always enjoy the dark surroundings that shooting this way renders, really isolating the subject. Steve's points are well made.
