    Default A 'wee' Red...

In my book these Red Squirrels are far prettier and great characters compare to the Grey, but the best time to get them is far later on in the year where their real 'characteristics' come out, the ear tuffs. Shot deep in a lovely forest I know way up in the Highlands, but not ideal for light though. Just got him with the tree behind, nicer IMHO than the green backdrop.

Thanks for either viewing or commenting on the previous image.

This Red Squirrel stands out beautifully, Steve!

Just curious about those ear tufts, since you mentioned it - do they have something to do with breeding?

Superb capture, beautiful rich colours and I love the greens in the FG and BG, good choice of DOF (helps focus on the subject alone even though he/she is quite small in the frame); pose is superb.

Cannot believe how tiny these guys are... this is lovely, I want to stretch my hand out, grab him and put him in my pocket:)

    Have a wonderful evening,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Steve - I think he checking you out. Nice pose with the paws in front. Good colors and details as always. I wonder about an alternative crop with a bit of the tree of the lhs. It just seems to overwhelm the squirrel for me slightly. Any chance you shot a portrait orientation for comparison?

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Steve, very cute looking fella. Your usual good techs. The high SS and ISO I assume because you were trying to catch him on the move. Amazing that no noise is visible. I see why you crop this way. The diagonal line of the tree trunk is a powerful line and you had it where it needs to be. Good choice of having a brighter BG against the subject instead of veery dark green. Loi

    Hi Steve

For me the comp works- eye is drawn straight to this little one, skipping the OOF branch in left corner; which is needed in this image.
The angle is interesting with the tree behind him, I always strive for a "clean" BG- makes one think..
Love his pose- disturbed and lifting his head from his meal
    Regards

    Andre.

Excellent shot love the composition and detail. The lack of noise I would attribute to a well exposed image and one that has not been minimally cropped. I guess your sharpening mask in raw was 50 or higher?

Thanks folks, just wanted to get a different species into the mix.

I guess your sharpening mask in raw was 50 or higher?
A lot lower Jon, I'll post an image later re detail, however I am just refining things a lot more in both set-up and the way I now shoot/process, it is a constant 'evolution'. A fixed lens will always be sharper, but the 200-400 isn't that far off at present. I'm undecided about which lens to take at the end of the month for a quick break, as I need to ensure the 200 hasn't slightly drifted off, but if it has then it will just go back to Canon and I'll get it back in 48hrs, ready for later.

Nice pose, low POV here Steve. I do like the tree in the BG behind him a lot!
I agree with Rachel on a closer crop from LHS and bottom, though?
