    Default Red Fox Kits

As an avian guy, this is my first post to the Wildlife forum.

Three of a litter of five waiting at the mouth of the den for their siblings to emerge after the adult male returned with a vole for their dinner. Barrie, Ontario. April 30th

    Canon 7d MkII, 500mm f/4 IS
    1/1600 @ f.4.0 ISO 1600

Reduced colour temp to 4400K (RAW file was very warm). Some colour NR in LR
NR on the BG in PS, USM sharpening on the kits after resize. All C&C welcome! Thanks for looking.

Hello Tim -- welcome to the Wildlife forum ! very cute moment u have got here . unfortunately the sharpening on the main subject looks too much and the noise reduction on the BG appears excessive. Is there to much of Crop involved ??

Hi Tim - Welcome to the Wildlife Forum! It's a fun image with the 3 fox kits and the centered comp works well with them looking in different directions. They rarely cooperate and look at the camera for us. I agree with Haseeb that the sharpening and NR both look a bit too strong but both should be easy fixes.

It would be great to get your thoughts on other wildlife images too. Like in Avian, we recommend commenting on 3-5 other wildlife images each time you post one of your own.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Tim, welcome to Wildlife Forum. These guys are super cute and I like the low shooting angle. Tough choice here. At F4, your DOF is limited. Close down the aperture to F8 and you got more of the BG. Loi

Hi Tim, and another warm welcome, at this age Fox cubs are 'oh so cute' and this has the cute factor!

Sadly to me, the image isn't sharp and lacks clarity and detail, is this a big crop? Overall there appears to be a lot of noise (partly dealt with by NR applied to the BKG) and so I wonder if the exposure was correct, the dark/shadow areas look lightened, highlighting/emphasising any noise IMHO. Tim, I'm really surprised with the kit, if this was with the old 7D then I might have expected it to a point, but from what some of the Avian bods have been posting...

The image has the hallmarks of being a really good one and I love the cubs sitting and with some interaction, but to me something isn't quite right, sorry.

If you can add any more info to the shot in relation to PP etc that might give a better steer, as I am making certain 'assumptions'.

    Cheers
    Steve

Thank you for sharing this image, so very cute and adorable those fox cubs, lovely pose, Steve is right and I too think you might have "overcropped" here - kindly share with us the image as it was taken and talk us through your processing steps...those little guys are gorgeous, I think this is worth revisiting if possible, thank you so much for sharing

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

This is a case where I let the subject overrule my critical eye. This is not much of a crop at all, but the original is just too soft and noisy for a keeper. I find ISO 1600 to be at the limit for the 7D, and I haven't gotten many useable image at that speed. The light just wasn't there for this shot (hence f/4), but I tried to rescue it because of the pose. Unsuccessfully as it were. So I have to agree with all of the comments.

Hi Tim, learn from this and put it into future images. I've just posted something and I too fell into the same trap, we learn from mistakes.

A cute moment and nice low angle Tim. Agree with above comments but a memorable sighting for sure.
Looking forward to more of your wildlife images!
