    First test with the newly purchased Canon 7D

    Canon 7D + L USM Canon 400 f / 5.6 the car window
    Light crop composition, processing with DPP and GIMP

    A gorgeous pheasant and well exposed -- I have heard that there is little leeway on that camera for bringing the exposure up in processing without getting too much noise. Nice quality at ISO 1000, too!

    I assume it's just a test shot, but it would be nice to have all the tail in the frame. There is plenty of extra room to the right and above to aim the camera more to the left and down. If there isn't time to switch to a different focus sensor you can try holding the shutter button halfway down and recomposing. Depth of field is usually small and if the subject to camera distance changes that will give poor focus, but sometimes it's worth a try to get the subject well composed.
