after waking up and doing a little preening, one by one they all took off to go do whatever it is that they do during the day. i had been taking shots of these guys in the water and took a chance when this one took off to see if i could get him sharp. i think i got lucky! the light had gotten bright enough that my ss was up enough to do it. what do you think?

    D300, Bigma at 270mm, f/6, 1/1000s, -0.6EV, ISO 200, on the dinky tripod.

    comments and critiques appreciated.

Nice exposure and looks pretty sharp here. Quite like the pink against the dark green, not sure I'm quite as fond of where the green/brown intersect with the bird tho'.

    Good going Mr H!

I like the colors and the exposure. Perhaps you could sharpen the eye more though.

Nicely done Harold! Don't sell yourself short here; you did a good job. For more consistently good results, push your ISO a little higher and use a smaller aperture for more DOF and/or faster shutter speed.

Lucky nothing, you are a skilled photographer! How's that sound! :)

Agree with Doug in the aperture, etc, for sure no problems going with ISO 400 or 800 with the D300!!

    Keep up the good work!!

Agree with the the increase ISO for extra dof !!! .... but do keep in mind the bg will become more distinct and will be detracting more. Here you could do some very light blurring to get back to the wide open look !!

btw ISO wise I have found that with the D300 800 is pushing it. It is usable but need lots of noise reduction which decreases sharpness. I have been trying not go go above 640 and usually less. The color of the subject will determine how high you can go. Light colors you can get away with it but with dark you will be in trouble. To check for noise just look at 100 %

I like the up wing stroke and feather reproduction. Excellent and great panning !!!

Very, very, nice Harold. The only thing I would consider changing is boosting the hue/saturation of your subject only. Looks good!
