Canon 2x mkiii extender.
Hi, I'm off on a bird photography holiday soon and I was thinking of purchasing the canon 2x mkiii extender. I already own the 1.4x mkiii and use this on my canon 600mm mkii lens with either a 7D2 or 1dx. Does anyone know whether it's worth the purchase of the 2x and what the image quality loss is.
thanks for your help.

of course it is worth, with the right technique you can get tack sharp images and the AF with 1DX is fast enough for flight

Post a Thank You. - 1 Thanks

The 2X in invaluable to me. I use it on both the 1DX and the 7D2. I shoot it wide open and I don't think I have ever thought on an image that it caused noticeable image degradation. The thing you have to be more concerned about is air quality. With the 2X you can shoot from farther distances but it also means you are subject to more atmospheric conditions.

Great, that's all I needed to hear. Cheers

Just realize that with the 7D MkII, it's only going to be practical for BIF when the bird is slow, like a pelican or goose. You'll need the 1D X and/or a lot of luck and skill for fast BIF with either the 7D2 or 5D3. It's great on any of these bodies for perched birds and only okay for slow moving birds.

Thanks for the replies. Just another thought. I already own the 2x mkii. I appreciate the mkiii extender are matched to the mkii lenses but is the difference in extenders really evident. Just wondering whether the mkii would be sufficient on my mkii 600mm lens or would I lose to much image quality.

for best results, avoid using the 2X TC MKII with your 600 II and 1DX.
It is not just the difference in optics, the MKII TC does NOT have any electronics. the MKIII TC has a micro-processor that "unlocks" the high speed /high precision AF when coupled with a 1DX and a MKII lens.

Arash, I am trying to decide on the 1.4 or 2.0 III for my 7D2 with new 100-400 EF 2 lens. B & H just told me the auto focus will not work with the 2.0. True? I would like the reach of the 2.0 for a Peregrine eyrie I am watching but am worried about getting good results. 1.4 or 2.0???

BH are right, the 100-400 will not AF with a 2X TC. Even with the 1.4X the AF will be slow for birds in flight.

thanks for confirming Arash. I do not anticipate using it for BIF, just select situations, like the Peregrine Falcon nest I am monitoring
