    Default Bison, snow, steam!

What more could you ask for.. Probably -20 degrees F on this day in the interior of Yellowstone National Park at the Fountain Paint Pot thermal area. Clypsidra Geyser erupts nearly non stop and puts out a lot a steam at this temperature. I could see the potential for a nice animalscape right away. Hope your not all getting tired of these theme images!

Now Dale, this is the type of stuff I thought we were going to see. Though I have to admit I'm not sure I would have been thrilled to shoot in the -20 degree weather. Lovely scene with nice detail in the snow and steam, brilliant blue sky. Who could tire of these types of images? If I had to change one thing I would want the bison more parallel to the sensor rather than angled slightly away. Keep them coming.

    Rachel

Yea we sure didn't have the best of conditions this winter in Yellowstone. I wish we would have! Here's my thought on the bison.. I like that he's following the tracks in the snow which provide a nice leading line into the geyser/steam which is an very important element in this image. So I feel the bison following that leading line compensates for the less than ideal positioning and also tells a story....

    Hi Dale

Stunning scene and comp! Looks bloody cold!
Personally I think that the position of Bison in the scene works well.
Would just selectively lift the shadows on Bison a bit.
Depending on your ethics, I would clone out shadows in LHC.
Hope you used a tripod, camera shake in these temperatures can be severe!!!
    Regards

    Andre.

Hi Dale - I understand your point and by no means it is a deal breaker.

    Hello Dale,

Apologies for coming in late, looked at this image while at work and was under impression that I commented already. This is an amazing scene - I must admit, when viewing the thumbnail I thought it was an avalanche:)

You say we might get tired of your theme images? No way, in fact I am quite taken with the variety of species in your latest posts, and certainly your landscapes are very unique as well as beautiful. This is perhaps the most spectacular in terms of the environment, and I like the subject so small in the frame for it makes the landscape appear so grand. I like everything here, including those animal tracks ( we call it "spoor" in SA), and the volcano steam reaching for the sky.

The only thing I might change if this were mine - sorry to mention it again - is the shadows on the LHS. I know they were there in the first place, I just have a feeling the image would benefit to some extent if they were removed.

I am following your posts with much interest, this part of the world is unknown to me and you have a wonderful gift of capturing those special scenes I so enjoy viewing. I will probably never get there but I still get to see the place through your eyes, so thank you so much for sharing

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Dale, awesome, love it.

Would like to have seen the same shot with an even wider lens to appreciate the scale & vastness. The colours are great & crisp and I like the placement of the subject. Another great 'Animalscape' image, really enjoying viewing these.

"Animalscape", great description. When I saw the position of the Bison my first thought "Heading for the Steam, time to warm up!". So this works well for me. I don't find the shadows on the left to be a bother, as they match the shadows further up in the frame coming from the trees, so I "know" there are more trees to the left.

    Hi Dale,
Great shot. I love it, specially the landscape and composition.
