I propose this shot of a few months ago took on the shores of Lake Maggiore

The shot I consider it a bit 'too high (laziness .....) but otherwise it seems to me that, from a Canon 400L f / 5.6 and an "obsolete" EOS 1D Mark IIn one can not ask for more. .. or am i wrong?

I don't know that camera but from what I hear I think it's not that bad. And the lens has been used for many excellent images.

I like the subject you found and how you framed the composition. The goose looks like it is thinking about something. I think the main thing you should think about here is the contrast. That isn't a problem with the camera or the lens, but just how the raw processing is done/ (I assume you are shooting raw.) If you are able to extract a little more detail from the lights and darks (mostly the darks here) in the raw converter you will have lower contrast and a more pleasing image. That should be easy witht he Shadows slider (combined with Highlights and Exposure) in recent versions of Adobe Camera Raw (CS6) or Lightroom 4 or later.

I think you might crop a little more off the top, too, to remove the lighter area at the top edge. That will keep the eye on the goose more.

    Here is the new processing:
    light crop
    less saturation

I tried to "extract" more details.

Hi Gianluca! Diane has provided great advice! Your re-post is much better concerning contrast, but now seems to be cropped in a little too tight, especially on the left. I really like the "thoughtful" look of the goose in your original post (Just needed a little bit off the top and the right). With the new tighter crop, we have now lost a bit of the image quality. (IQ) on the neck, although the face looks nice and sharp. Also, I love the "silky" look to the water in the background (BG).... You have a very artistic "eye" and will look forward to seeing more from you. Thanks!

A quick note on post processing... I believe you use Gimp? Although not familiar with that program, I understand that it is quite capable. You may wish to also check out the availability of Photoshop Elements in Italy. It is quite affordable here in the US and you can download a trial version (which is actually the full program) for free for 30 days.

Yes, much better! (But what do you think? That's what is important.) I agree with Sandy about the crop.

    I reduced the brightness (little)

There's nothing wrong with a 1DMkIIn mate. In the right hands it can produce excellent images. A lot of it has to do with how you capture the original RAW file!
I doubt that there are obsolete cameras, but there are poor photographers who blame their equipment rather than learn how to shoot properly. :)

The tighter crop looks much better and the only thing I could suggest is be more at the eye level with the bird and try to get the head side-on, parallel with the sensor.

    Well done.
