Theme: Canyon Tree

Greetings. Here's a photo from a few years back just processed for the theme (one of those great things about themes is finding things long forgotten from the archive)... From the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.



Toning with SEP, Topaz Impression - modified charcoal setting. Several more SEP layers and multiply blend to selectively darken and restore color with luminosity blends. Oh, a fill layer of the color of the yellow rocks to colorize a monochrome layer, too.

I like how the light regions (snow?) help to draw attention to the subject tree. They also make the texture of the rocks more important. Good composition, too. Not only in terms of having the main tree in front of the light area but where the major light/dark boundaries fall within the image.

Great natural subject shown in an abstract manner! The focus on the single tall pine is perfect. Then the subtle swirls in the rocks and the lines of color draw my eye out to explore the image. Good creative combination of filters and effects. I agree with you that the themes inspire a new and different life for older images. Just thinking, what about a thin border?

Hi, Michael, I keep seeing images that have been processed using the charcoal setting and I'm really sorry that I didn't take advantage of any sales that were going on when Impression was launched. Maybe I can catch one some day. I love the lone tree as a focal point and the surrounding abstract rock formations and trees. Nice job Not only are themes nice for going back into our files but I find that I'm aware of upcoming themes when I'm out shooting. Our camera club has a "trash" theme coming up and I was actually taking pictures of trash in Venice - not something I think I would have normally done.

Nancy, borders aren't something I've worked with... I don't really have the eye for them.

Cheryl, Ah, Venice. I was there once long ago... I shot a few maybe a roll of film there (one of only a dozen or so rolls of film I shot over a 30 year period before I rediscovered photography through digital means). I remember not being particularly impressed with Venice (it was toward the end of long 9 country hejira) but the photos were outstanding... perhaps, the best of the trip. A very photogenic city (ha, even the trash ;-).

Dennis, not snow but a fall line probably cleared each year by snow.

Fascinating image. Marvelously different. Creative. Wonderful feel of largeness, space, rocky terrain, trees. Love the monochrome plus a bit of green. Excellent work.
Have you considered making the main tree just a tad darker?
