    Default Bull Elk in Yellowstone

Late one day this bull elk cooperated and moved out of the shadows into the nice afternoon light for a few minutes. Dale, can correct me if I am wrong, but this is an area that would normally have a much deeper snowpack in early February when we were there. No water would normally visible in the bg. This day it was particularly warm as well.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Hey Rachel,

You are correct there was a much lower snowpack than normal and the area in the BG should have been covered in snow and ice during a normal winter. You have beautiful light to work with here and the colorful willows are great. The pose of the elk here is somewhat awkward not befitting his normal elegance! The bulls don't' expend much energy during the winter so there movements are slow and deliberate which may account for his position. Was he just rising from his daybed?

Hi Dale, thanks. I think he was already up and walking a bit but the other bull is just out of the frame to the left so I don't know if that is also affecting his stance. He just seemed to be lumbering about slowly.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Hello Rachel,

Lovely image of this cooperative elk in good light, I like the rich colours of the environment and amazed at the amount of vegetation present in the winter months. Your PP work is spot-on, subject sharp and well exposed and the pose not an issue to me ( I am thinking he was having a "conversation" with the other fellow)

If I were to change anything, I would take off a bit from the bottom of the image, but only a tad.

Enjoyed viewing, very much - thank you Rachel

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Rachel

Agree with Gabriela about rich, warm colours and the contrast of the cold white snow.
Would also crop a tad from the bottom.
The DOF worked well with him being on a hill and the direct BG further.
    Nice one!
    Regards

    Andre.

Thanks Gabriela and Andre. I'll take a look at trimming a bit from the bottom.

Hi Rachel, like the warm colours set against the crisp white of the snow. Good detail & sharpness, nice to shoot at low ISO's.
