Hey Rachel,
You are correct there was a much lower snowpack than normal and the area in the BG should have been covered in snow and ice during a normal winter. You have beautiful light to work with here and the colorful willows are great. The pose of the elk here is somewhat awkward not befitting his normal elegance! The bulls don't' expend much energy during the winter so there movements are slow and deliberate which may account for his position. Was he just rising from his daybed?

Hi Dale, thanks. I think he was already up and walking a bit but the other bull is just out of the frame to the left so I don't know if that is also affecting his stance. He just seemed to be lumbering about slowly.
Thanks again,
Rachel

Hi Rachel
Agree with Gabriela about rich, warm colours and the contrast of the cold white snow.
Would also crop a tad from the bottom.
The DOF worked well with him being on a hill and the direct BG further.
Nice one!

Hi Rachel, like the warm colours set against the crisp white of the snow. Good detail & sharpness, nice to shoot at low ISO's.
