Hi Jon, nice clean shot of the Gannet, cool to have some nesting material and a cooperative HA, good to have them on a grassy knoll too, rather than that cliff face. A softer look and without all that blue fishing net stuff they use to bolster their nests with. Good detail & shapes, I think a hint more Clarity i.e. +6 may bring out a bit more in the white plumage, but there seems to me a lot of 'red' warmth, unless this was shot towards evening?

Can I assume this is further up passed the various viewing points, sadly I think they have closed off the area were we used to go up to, as it was eroding fast. If this was taken this week, I may have a wander up there in two weeks time, as my key target is nesting I hope, so it's only a 45 min drive from the other house.

Thanks Steve here is a version - DPP -to Tiff, Tiff to ACR plus Clarity - maybe too much clarity on the head - maybe not??

Hi Jon, for me this is where Layers & Masks come into play and where you can build, target and be specific to key areas, rather than Global adjustments. I do think (personal POV) that reducing the contrast opens the image up more, it appears to be choking the detail, you have some cracking detail within the subject and if you have the time, teasing some of the finer detail in the plumage out, reducing the slight hint of Blue in the LHS of the body plumage albeit subtle, helps overall. As I said, this is my own thoughts, others will have a different take, so I'm not saying this is right, but may help illustrate some of my thinking in terms of the adjustments.

    Cheers
    Steve

Hi Jon very lovely image with some nice soft tone and colors. The nesting material is a great bonus and i am with Steve that i like the very natural looking setting . I am returning to Helgoland next month for the Gannets and i would love to find this setting there , but there you have orange fishing net and rocks .
So i prefer this one .
You have a nice IQ and this does look processed well ..

I tried to get the whites with a bit more detail with my RP .

WDYT ? If you like to know what i did, just ask .

    Hi Jon
Takes me back a bit ! Last time I went to Bempton was before it was a reserve. I recall scaring my wife and kids and myself to death when I started to slide down a grassy slope getting nearer to the Puffins. I remember we were the only people there !!
My how things have changed !
Grand picture by the way- I prefer no 2 if I had to pick, but any would do for me.

Very nice shot Jon, I've only been once but my best shots were the ones on the cliff edge.

Perfect head angle, especially with the nesting material, and I like the extra details you've teased out of your second version

Such a wonderful image. RP takes it up a notch.... love the grasses on the right side... nesting grasses in bill make it awesome! I can only dream of seeing one of these someday. Thanks.

Excellent setting, perfect head angle, super nice vertical composition. Lots to like, and the repost(s) do improve things, albeit very subtly. Really nicely done.

Well done Jon. I really like the pose the gannet gave you on this image. Lovely colours throughout. The bird looks real good with the grasses in its mouth. I also like the sheer drop effect on the LHS. Nice one

    Excellent image, Jonathan.
All has been said. Love the cliff and feel of depth in the image and spectacular pose of bird with nesting material.

excellent shot ... the Gannets in South Africa nest on the rocks so no grassy knolls to soften the image ... great clarity and prefer the repost by Andreas but all are terrific!

This has a lovely, almost misty, feeling to it. The look-back pose is terrific, and the nesting material tops it off. Steve's repost in pane#4 pulls some texture out of the whites, and works nicely for me.

  18. Thanks Jonathan Ashton thanked for this post
