    Default Hooded Merganser

This guy showed up at our local pond this week with a few of his buddies. One of my favorite species....
    Canon 7D Mark II
    300 f/4 lens with 1.4 extender
    f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 640
He was 75 feet away, so the image is heavily cropped. However, I captured the image about an hour before sunset, so the light was good (hopefully compensating to some extent for the large crop!)

Details are nice considering how far away the bird was, and how nice to capture him with the hood fully displayed! With that late sun it almost came out monochromatic with the water matching the bird almost too closely, but it does give it a Golden Pond kind of feeling!

    What Warren said. Very nice!

I think a slight crop from the top (almost halfway to the head) would give a little more balance. But that's a minor point -- very nice as is!

    Lovely capture, Wendy!

How cute your subject is! Lovely colours and pose, nice point of view, perhaps a slight crop from the top would certainly benefit this image, I would also sharpen the bird a tad more if this were mine.

I usually try to avoid a large crop because it does affect the IQ to some extent, would be interested to see the same image with a lesser crop and maybe more of a pano, WDYT? Just a suggestion, not sure if it works but worth a try?

Keep those images coming, I am looking forward to your next

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thanks all. Gabriela...here I've cropped it less...and produced more of a pano. I'm not sure about it...let me know what you think.

The pano doesn't work for me. He just seems so lonely :)

Another crop you could try is, keep the original, with Diane's suggestion, but move the duck more
to the left hand and emphasize the break that's following him. Sure he'll be more centered and/or swimming
out of the picture, but when the emphasis is on the break like this, it'll work.

I have an example at: http://bit.ly/1yeXQBf

I think you could insert "Visit Syracuse!" on the left and it would make a super Billboard!

The pano crop changed the entire image and to me, the photograph now relates elegance and silence, a feeling of tranquility as a beautiful animal moves silently at the time of day when the light is fading. It is a very pleasing image!

I agree with Steve. The grace note for the pano crop is the light reflection in the left that balances the duck.
