    Default Common Murre for Breakfast...

    Attached Images Attached Images

I've been posting 7dII/1.4X II/100-400 II image on the blog recently. Along with lots of lessons on getting them sharp with this combo when hand holding. Scroll down here to see more and to learn.

This image was created at Morro Bay with the hand held Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III (at 560mm), and the amazing Canon EOS 7D Mark II. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop as framed: 1/640 sec. at f/9.

Center AF point (by necessity)/AI Servo Expand/Shutter Button AF as framed was active at the moment of exposure (as is always best when hand holding). The center AF point was right on the bird’s neck.

Don't be shy; all comments are welcome. a

Nice head turn and eye contact. Great details and sharpness.
Nice layered background and excellent POV.
The dead bird at the feet tells the story.
They are just coming to our area by the hundreds right now and even heading further North.
Twenty years ago the were considered rarities here.

Superb detail and light Arthur- and background.
To be really nitty picking I would slice a sliver off the left side and some off the top.

'Nice to see I'm not the only one who takes the opportunity to shoot Vultures. To me they're often a challenge to expose properly, and this one is dead on, beak to tail and down to the prey...or should I say meal...item. As I often said to my barber when I had hair, maybe a little off the top (for composition). Oh, and I'm keeping an eye on our local Least Tern nesting area.

A very dramatic image Sir Arthur,

The vulture is so striking (love the colour red on its face, so vivid, resembles blood), great detail on those brown feathers and sharpness is spot-on - superb techs!

I like the framing and composition as well as colours - the blue in the BG adds so much to this image. Nothing common about this frame - save for the poor Murre, now reduced to a pile of feathers and about to be devoured:)

Would love to see more images of this Vulture catching or eating his prey -do you happen to have a sequence from this sighting?

    Kind regards,

I like the image as is. As has been said perfect techs. The background is interesting with what appears to be fog or clouds in the upper area. I noticed in your description of how your captured the image that you were using A1 Servo AF (Nikon’s Continuous). I wondered why when the bird appeared stationary? Do you ever use One-Shot AF.

Excellent IQ on the subjects, I would smooth the BG out just a tad, it seems a tiny bit noisy for iso 400?

    Kind regards,
Thanks all. I am fine with a bit off the top. Gabriela, these guys do not hunt. They are garbage collectors . I have a few other frame but none as sharp or lovely (if you can use that word to describe a vulture photo) as this one. I do have a sequence to post in your forum but it will take me some time to complete it.... a

Nice frame of this Turkey Vulture. I love the waxy looking red cere and nare on these guys and the colors look vibrant and true. Nice HA and feather details. I'm glad the Murre got away

Hi Joe, Thanks for your e-mail :). When I am hand holding (as I was for this image) I want AF to be active at the moment of exposure to prevent any movement of the lens (caused by me or my breathing...). If you move even a millimeter after you set One-Shot (or Rear Button) AF you will throw off accurate focus.... I have been really emphasizing that point on the blog recently.

I rarely use One-Shot per say but when I am using Rear Button I am really using One-Shot....

ps: The white is a breaking wave, a good reason to be in Manual mode.... a

My pleasure and you are most welcome. Many folks miss that point and then complain about their cameras :)
