Finally I had a chance to test the above combo as a lightweight BIF on the backyard hummingbirds. I have to say I'm quite pleased with the results. The 1DX feels so much more solid than the 7D2 even with the addition of the 1.4X and statistically my "keeper" rate went way up compared to the 100:400 and 7D2 without the 1.4X. The image file looks better to my eye too. I'm glad I returned the 7D2.

I will post 2 images. The first is a FF and the second is a crop (I think) close to 100% of the hummingbird.

Hi Loi, lovely images with great detail and sharpness! I have the 100-400 II and 1.4X TC III (and a 500 II) & a 5D3 and am happy with the IQ even with the extender attached. Have been thinking about the 7D2 as a second body. Is it better to get another 5D3 or should I get the 7D2? I don't think I can afford the 1DX right now. Have been seriously thinking of getting the 7D2 but the varied reviews have confused me.
    thanks,
    sanjeev

Hi Sanjeev, sorry didn't see your question until now. Just came back from a trip to Mashatu and Mala Mala and the sightings were amazing. Regarding the 7D2, I have seen many good reviews and perfect images, but I found it difficult to get sharp images hand held, which I do most of the time with my 5D3 and 1DX. I tried 2 camera bodies and returned them both. A lady on my safari had a 7D2 and she was not happy with what she got as far as sharpness goes and she plans to get a 5D3 for her next trip. Sorry to be negative on this body, but that was my personal experience. Loi

There have been a lot of negative experiences, but I've been very happy with my copy. Sharpness is about equal to the 5D3, with one stop more noise (and thus lower resolution) but the crop factor is a plus and the autofocus is better (more responsive), for me. But it can't compete with the 1DX.

Thanks Loi and Dianne. Appreciate your feedback and your experience with the 7DII. Will try that body out myself and see how it goes. Else, may get another 5D3.
