    Default Ladder-backed Woodpecker

Miguel and I visited one of our favorite local photography spots the other day, and happened upon a pair of Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. These birds peck away at cacti just like they do on tree trunks.

Doug, The background is perfect as is the perch, and all your techs. I would prefer that the bird's head would have been angled toward the viewer ever so slightly instead of perfectly parallel to the camera. (A minor point, but we have to pay our dues to the Head Angle police.

Hi Doug, lovely soft light, and I like the comp and pose. It amazes me how birds can perch on thorny perches and not injure themselves. The colour of the BG compliments the WP nicely.

Excellent IQ, nice pose and background, Doug. The opposite angle of the perch to the bird's angle, creates a nice framing opportunity.

Nice pose, comp, and bg. The perch is awesome. I've never seen one of these in the wild. Nice capture.

    Beautiful capture, Doug!

It seems as if the Woodpecker is precariously balancing on the cacti... superb image well composed and presented, fabulous (and dangerous) perch, wonderful colours - a pleasure to view!

    Kind regards,

    Whats not to like!
Great BG and perch. Also great IQ.I love the way the perch is bent over to create a nice line within the frame.
I am wondering if the blacks could use a bit of a punch here? Adjusting levels ever so slightly?

Great capture Doug, all the colors really compliment each other with excellent detail and the perch is great change from the typical large tree trunk images

Hi Gail. These blacks actually are pushed considerably to the left. Ladder-backed Woodpeckers don't have deep blacks in their plumage.
