Lens Cap for Telephoto lenses
Hi All
I finally got my Nikon 600f4 and was wondering if any of you use lens caps instead of the hood?
I have seen these caps which I quite like the look of but wanted to know if anyone has any other suggestions?

There is a wildlife photographer I have seen on Youtube using this cap on his lenses and he spoke very highly of them
Please let me know your thoughts
Thanks
Shane

I use hoodies from Lenscraft that match the Lenscoat covers. Example

Don't consider a cap a replacement for a lens hood. These substitute caps are good, but they don't protect the lens element from rain/snow/flare while you're shooting. That's a big piece of glass that can catch a ton of unwanted light if you're shooting in a cross-light.
Zeck seems to recommend leaving his cap on until you're ready to shoot, but I see that as one more action required to get ready to shoot your subject, which may be moving. Also, it's a pretty large piece, that you may need to just throw on the ground if you don't have time to stow it somewhere. A cap is good when transporting or storing your lenses, but not while actually in use. I think that's a little anal.

Lens Cap for Telephoto lenses
I want to make sure the glass is protected when i am hiking with the lens in my rucksack and the lens is placed vertically
Its not my plan for it to replace the hood. I was actually referring to the bag like cover which comes over the lens and lenshood from factory

Hi shane,
This is what I use on my Canon 600 vII
It doesn't fit perfectly so i just secure it with painters' tape for long trips. Cheap but very effective. I have used this for 3 overseas trip with no problems,

Tupperware lids!! I hadn't thought of that. Will try to find some in the right diameter and test.
Thanks for the idea ;)

Hi Shane, I have a Canon 400 DO.... as you know, the lens cover hood is actually a "hoodie"... not the same as the "lens hood". That big awkward lens "cover" thing drove me NUTS! (and takes up a lot of space in my bag). I bought one of the donzeck's caps... very happy. Ingenious design. Also fits in your pocket nicely when not in use. Beats tupperware big time. (pricey, but actually works!)

Thanks for the advice! That hoodie of mine looks like it would drive me nuts too when hiking. Will probably go for the Don Zeck as you suggest

Thanks for this Marc
Does this cover have a hard area covering the glass element or is it pure neoprene all over? I am a freediver and have loads of neoprene about the house. May actually make my own version and see how it goes.
Still will probably get the Don Zeck version too
