Well, he is a stranger in these parts, anyhow! This male Eider duck was photographed in Svalbard in June 2012 at about 1 o'clock in the morning!

EOS 1D MkIV, EF 500L IS, Gitzo tripod laid flat and a Mongoose head.
    1/320 second @f/10, ISO 1600
Adjusted and converted in DPP4, then in PS5 adjusted Levels and played around with various masks and Curves adjustments to tweak out more detail in the black head. NR on the background with Dfine.

I think he is a handsome devil and I hope you like him!

    Comments and suggestions most welcome.

    Thanks for looking, Gerald

He is indeed a handsome devil and well presented. I feel there is a slight blue cast about the image. Maybe just a little warming up would do the trick.

Handsome indeed. Very nice portrait, with lovely comp. I agree with Jonathan that a slight warming might be in order; perhaps a little more NR on the BG; and if the horizon line in the eye is any measure, maybe a slight rotation.

I've been salivating over the idea of a trip to Svalbard. Any suggestions as to trip providers or itineraries?

Are our eyes fooling us? I too think that I see a blue cast, but the whites look good. Your details are amazing, especially in the white face.

Excellent comp and details. Ditto the cast...easy fix via Color Balance (just add 2-3 points of reds, that should do the trick).

Hi Gerald, great close up showing superb detail on the plumage. Well exposed, and cast easily fixed. I do like the pastel blue of the BG.

Many thanks for the kind words and encouragement - very much appreciated.

Attached is a revised post which I hope has overcome the blue cast, but still remains on the cool side - plus I have let through a bit more NR on the background.

    Best wishes, Gerald

Hi Gerald nice work with this portrait , love the details in HL/shadows as these guys are tricky to expose !!!
I am fine with the colors in general , would just remove some of the blue from the head .

Good work , your PP is getting better from my POV my friend .

I just pushed things a bit further ...... WDYT?

    Cheers Andreas

Gerald for sure only subtle changes ......... if the base is already that good !!!!!
And the subtle changes are not really necessary , just a slightly different version !!

    Cheers Andreas
