Default Reflecting on the call of nature

    Attached Images Attached Images

This newborn gnu calf took time out to scan the waters edge whilst answering possibly his first ever call of nature, looking carefully one can make out his stream and associated water ripples and also his umbilical cord still attached.

The midday lighting wasn't in my favour, but I think the colours make up for it to a degree. I had considered this as a B&W when first capturing this, but have been a little dissappointed with my conversion attempts.

    Lake Ndutu/Serengeti region- Northern Tanzania.

    D4s 500 f/4VR 1/5000s f/5.6 ISO400 Slight crop for comp/levelling, curves, layers, TK masking in ACR/PS CC '14.

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers
    Marc

Great scene, nice exposure and details, but I would like a bit more room at right.

I like the image design and idea...nice reflection and overall exposure.
It does seem to me like it needs a CW rotation but that could just be me...Lets see what the others think! Nicely done Marc

It does give that appearance, and has already been levelled, and has to be based on the gnu's feet placement and the cropped rear BG was the key

Hi Marc - I really like the water as the bg and fg with a strong reflection. The comp works well and nice detail. The feet look level to me, I think it's the lines in the bg that give the optical illusion of it needing rotation.

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hello Marc,

A very powerful image from the emotional POV, at least for me. I have a very soft spot for the young and fragile and this image grabs me - it brings "Bamby" back, straight from my childhood years. Those tiny long spidery legs, the lack of proper balance, the look back (seeking Mom, reassurance, safety?), all that water surrounding a subject looking so helpless...Not sure what happened next, and yes I do wish to know - that is, if you have more images from this sighting... love the reflection, composition, all add up to a very special image I shall remember for some time - thank you Marc, heart melting content and techs go down the drain for me, light not in your favour but you did well with PP work and this is something that will stay with me for some time - thank you for sharing

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

I like the story behind the image, and the fragile pose of the newborn. Cool that it is standing in shallow water like this to offer a nice reflection. I would have preffered the face better lit, but I understand the light conditions were not the best at the time. If mine I'd likely remove the dark spots at very bottom left corner. Very cool, and glad you kept in colour for us.

    Hi Marc

An image where image content is more important that IQ, it has to evoke an emotional response from your audience.
We have been debating content vs IQ, I believe depending who your audience is, and if you want to put the image in the marketplace; content sells more than IQ.
The ideal is to have both, but some of the most interesting captures last seconds and in bad light...
    Well spotted and captured.
    Regards

    Andre.

The setting, reflection and colour contrast here makes it an appealing image.
I probs wouldn't have noticed the "call of nature" if you hadn't pointed it out...
