Been in Alaska photographing eagles and playing catch up since I've been home. We found this bull elk on one of my Winter Yellowstone tours in Gardiner Canyon at the Boiling River parking area. Light was down behind the mountains to the west.

Hi Dale - Nice look at this bull. I presume this is the one that eluded us and only seemed to show himself when we were driving into the park before dawn or at a distance later in the day. Glad he finally cooperated for you. Nice brown tones to the elk, plants and the bg. DOF works well and nice detail too. Only thing I would do is back off on the sharpening of the plants in the lrc if possible.

    Rachel

Wonderful image Dale, subject pops so nicely against the BG and the colours are superb. Lovely detail on the elk and I like the pose as well as eye contact, he must have been so comfortable with your presence:)

I am really enjoying your posts and looking forward to more from this Alaska trip. I might never get there, a bit too far and surely an expensive exercise for us Africans, still great to experience the place through your eyes...and through your lens:)

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Beautiful earthy tones here. I like the composition, the BG and the antlers.

    Gabriela,

I don't venture to the bird forum often but I did post an eagle image from the Alaska trip there today if you'd like to check it out

Lovely image...Good balance between the buck on the right and the bush on the left. He pops nicely from the BG.

Lovely light and a very nice pose, excellent details, I agree about the grasses. It is only now I have noticed the elk has a bump on its nasal bridge.

Hi Dale, the IQ is very good and the colors are so pleasing , a little head turn towards the lens would have been great .

Hi Dale, DoF is spot on offering nice separation between subject & BKG and perfect HA and shows the rack off nicely. Gorgeous colours and overall colour palette here. sharpness looks fine to me, personal I just thought a sliver more at the foot would be nice.

Lovely view through the foliage here Dale...lovely earthy tones and punchy contrast too - not to mention the low POV.
I agree with Steve re space at the bottom, but certainly not a deal-breaker...
