Hi Mike Lots of good things going on here !!! The main is the exposure that you got right under difficult circumstances. I like the PS work for the bird also, colors realistic and just the right contrast.
Framing wise remember you want more room in front than behind the bird. Should have pointed the camera left more.
Ideally you want to find the bird on a lower perch and clean bt but this is what you had. Now expand from this and try to be more selective finding the birds. For this particular one I would stick with him and see if he flies to a nearby tree? Could be totally isolated !!!
btw you can come up with a great looking digital creation by darkening the four corners and making the bird lighter !!!!!

i'm sorry it took me so long to come back to this photo. i was looking at other "eager to learn" images and only then did i find that i could go back to this photo and comment on what i did.
i want to thank you all for your comments. Al, i DID burn the corners and lighten the bird to make it pop more, but have never seen this bird after this photo was taken. i've tried suit to draw it back, but it never came back.
